Actually the moment I heard him come in I took off the socks, ran down to greet him, and answered his slightly horrified look at the rest of the outfit with a flourish of my red socks and a "Hey, it coulda been worse, I could still be wearing these!"

He seemed less impressed than I expected. And then said something like, "Why do you shame me so?" when I showed him my lj entry. Men, eh? Make no sense sometimes.
