OK, is this some sort of new Canadian tradition? It's autumn, we must hold a federal election?

Sheesh! You'd think it was Italy or something. Hopefully public outcry will make the politicians think better of it!

Economic instability and a minority government in a Parliamentary system does tend to have results like that. When the minority government is anti-government-as-an-idea, well. It's not going to exhibit the characteristics of stability.

Plus, there's a combination of the fight between the resource-extraction business lobby (mostly oil) and the manufacturing-and-finance business lobby; the attempt to maintain the status quo ante in the face of increasing public awareness about things like climate change plus the early stages of the collapse of the American hegemony; the rather inevitable reactionary side effects of the Trudeau immigration policies; the rather inevitable reactionary response to major generational shifts in attitude about social norms; and the best efforts of the Christian Dominionists to produce a Canada they like.

It's going to be awhile before all that stabilizes all that much. And while a Harper majority would certainly lead to fewer elections, I can't see as how it would help with any of the actual issues. So, given the choice, I'll take the elections.
