Another one for the WTF files...

London Olympic Logo Triggers Debate.

Apparently, the official logo for the London Olympics of 2012 has been unveiled. And folks are arguing vehemently over whether or not it can be considered "hideous".

As a graphic designer, I think I have to agree that yes, it is in fact rather hideous.

I'm still wondering why there is a fairly obvious stylised map of Australia in the top right hand corner. Also why the Olympic colours are nowhere to be seen.

And apparently the logo comes in various different colours. Colours designed to "reach out" to young people.

What on earth is it supposed to BE?!?!?! I mean, if you try really, REALLY hard, you might be able to see the city of London broken up into bits as if on a map, but... gad. The design team should be taken out at dawn and tarred and feathered.

No, it's supposed to be the numbers 2, 0, 1 and 2. There is no London & no UK in the logo. And it's supposed to appeal to a "younger" audience. And it cost $796,000.

I can only assume that the money went to a large purchase of crack, which was first ingested by the designer and then shared among the committee who approved the design.

I think it's just a matter of poor timing. This was meant to be the logo for the 2012 B.C. Olympic games when the Flinstoneqsue look would have been really quite appropriate as would be the Hanna Barberra Orange™ used to color the hideous thing.

My second thought was that it was supposed to be some sort of Asian writing, until I paid more attention to the fact that it was for the London games. *headdesk*

Um.

When I look at that, I see one of two things. First: A person with an abnormally large head attempting to give another person a blow job. Second: A person viciously shoving another person (who has an abnormally large head and/or has his/her head unfortunately stuck in a crate) right in the mouth.

Neither one says "celebration of athletic prowess and world harmony!"

Well. Maybe the first one.
