Not the best day to start the day. MBPU was particularly soporific today. I thought I'd gotten enough sleep, but kept zoning out in class between one word and the next. I kept hoping I would last long enough to make it to break to get myself a stiff coffee. I did. But it's reading week in the rest of the campus, so all food-like places are closed. And I didn't bring myself lunch, because I thought I'd just get a bagel from the (closed) food place.

So in 1.5 hours I've got two more hours of class with MBPU, no lunch and no coffee.

Hopefully the hunger will keep me awake in place of the caffeine.

... nope.

I love this age. Have I mentioned that yet today? This is why I went through the baby and toddler years. This is what I wanted when I became a parent. They're so much fun!

To wit: tonight Daniel did his homework, finished writing a letter, and quietly played Magic against himself while Justin and I painted pictures of Disneyland. Then we had dinner and watched a bit of HP:Chamber of Secrets.

Nothing is broken.
Nothing is stained.
Nobody cried.
No paint got onto clothing/toys/people.
Nobody pushed/whined/grabbed/chattered until I had to take to my bed to recover from the intolerable stress of one measly craft.

And now the children are going to bed :)

Even their friends are fun at this age. Like Mario, who came over on Saturday to play D&D. At some point Daniel got a time-out because he freaked out, then Justin got a time-out because he was being too loud.

"Huh. There's nobody to play with me," commented Mario. He went over to the coffee table and sat down in front of it. "Except this bag." He smiled at a brown paper lunch bag on the table. "Hello, bag." He gazed at it for a minute. "Wanna play tag?" Small pause. Reach out, delicately tap the bag. "You're it."

And Eva, Anne's nine-year old daughter, playing dress-up with Garry and Carl, ages 6 and 10, who were dressed as a ninja and a pirate. Eva was a princess. Anne suppressed an annoyed observation about how gender-stereotyped they all were, especially when the ninja and pirate started to chase the princess all over the house. She dodged them for a good long time, then was finally cornered in a hallway, the pirate coming at her from one side and the ninja from the other. Anne wondered how she was going to escape this time, when Eva suddenly started to hiss. The boys stopped, a little alarmed. Eva held out her hands like a sorceress, and said in a creepy hissing voice, "Nooobody can trap me... nooobody can dare to touch me... get awaaaay... get awaaaay..." and effectively stunned the two boys into letting her sidle right past them and run off to the basement.

Modern fairy tales where the heroine actually gets to do something count for something after all, I guess :)

In other news: 12cm of snow and -12C (4.75" and 10.4F) may not be much, but... I have grown weary of this winter thing.

::waves hand imperiously:: Take it away!
