wow, what a shock
May. 10th, 2005 09:21 amActually, this was a bit of a shock. I expected to have more 100% Liberal scores, and I thought I was more fiscally conservative than I apparently am.
It's interesting, though, the cultural differences between Canada and America. As I was reading through this (American) quiz I kept remembering a woman from a discussion board who once described herself as "middle of the road - but you must remember I'm Texan." It was really neat to read her posts, because she was very independent and would weigh issues intelligently and thoughfully, but she was starting from a totally different base than, say, me. The middle of the Texan road is very, very different from the Canadian one.
Her posts made me really aware of how much we're influenced by our political surroundings, in that, for example, she would think through a particular gun control issue from the starting point of "obviously, people have an inalienable right to own hand guns" where my starting point was "obviously, only criminals would even want to own hand guns." And our starting points were pretty much due to simple geography.
And it was really neat when, beginning at such different 'middles' we would end up either agreeing with each other or at least seeing the wisdom of one another's point of view.
She once actually got me to consider that, if it were to result in lowering crime, the death penalty might be justified. And I had previously considered myself to be passionately and irredeemably anti-DP.
Damn. Suddenly, I miss her.
