Shoulda stood in bed
Apr. 30th, 2006 11:57 pmJustin had a hard day. Misbehaving/being annoying to all and sundry, getting time-out after time-out after time-out, not able to climb the wall at Mountain Equipment Co-op, losing his treat with dinner... just a crummy day overall.
Went to the Green Door for dinner and, as he'd lost his treat with dinner, he couldn't go to the dessert table. Which just put the cap on his horrible day. For somebody as food-centred as him, missing out on Green Door desserts => utter disaster.
Collapsed into a puddle of tears. I took him outside and had a long, long chat about his day. At one point he said "There's nothing that can save this day! Only a time-machine could save this day!"
Well, yeah. And being rather short on time-machines, there wasn't a lot to be done. So instead we talked about how to make tomorrow better, and how to live with the rest of today, and finally a bit of sunshine came peeking through and he was able to go back into the restaurant and keep himself together. And not piss anybody off for the rest of the meal.
Little face cleared up even more when Daniel decided he didn't like the pumpkin-seed cookie he'd gotten himself, and Chris asked if Justin wanted it. !!!, there's nothing quite like a food-centred kid who's resigned himself to no treat with dinner getting an unexpected gift like that.
And somewhere in there, it sure felt good when he gave me a hug, all full of six-year-old earnestness, and said, "I couldn't have a better Mama!"
... yeah, we're going to have to step up the Compassion Setting with him. He's so bloody loud and obnoxious that it's easy to just get angry at him and tell him to just go away. But that never works for long, and doesn't really make any of us happy.
