  • Justin had his first playdate on Thursday. God, he was so excited. Almost vibrating. I really hope we can do that more often; it's been so hard for him to watch Daniel going to friends' houses and having friends come over for years and not be able to do the same, because he was just too little.

  • Justin had his last day of school on Friday. I thought he'd be a lot more upset about it than he was.

  • Chris should be coming back from Toronto any minute now.

  • Had our Black History Month concert. It was a good thing we had guests, because with about half our choir ill, we were sounding a bit sparse.

  • Quote and link from [livejournal.com profile] neonnurse:
"Giving people the care they need is not socialism, it's Judaism. It's Christianity. It's Buddhism. It's Islam. It's mandated by nearly every religious tradition and moral code, going back to the Code of Hammurabi: "to bring about the rule of righteousness in the land... so that the strong should not harm the weak." There is separation of church and state, but there should never be separation of decency and state, especially in a democracy, where the sovereign IS the people, and the government an expression of their will."

  • Finally saw Brokeback Mountain. ::sniffle::

  • Family Law. A great class. Really interesting topic. Taught by enthusiastic profs. I will not be taking the Advanced class for it, and I will not be practicing it.

Cases are never about fun, happy, life-affirming things. If you've had to go to court over something, almost by definition, bad shit has come to pass. And I've read some really heartbreaking cases before, in Criminal, Contracts, Torts - hell, even in Property. But Family... god there's just no end to it. Nephews who try to declare invalid their uncle's 40-year marriage to the nice lady who cared for him through ten years of cancer, so they could toss her out on her Senior ass and run off with his millions. The 30-year old waitress who got an advanced Alzheimer's 78-year old man to cut his sons out of his will and leave her everything. The Canadian-Iranian guy who married a nice mail-order bride from back home, worked for four years to pay for her ticket to come over, a nice house for them to live in, close to schools for their children, jewelry for her and her mother... and then she never bothered to contact him once she was in Canada other than to send him a request for a divorce, now that she was a landed immigrant. Oh and the guy whose annual income was $5.5 million, who didn't feel he should have to pay child support.

I can't imagine spending my working life dealing with this kind of things every single day. It looks far more depressing than working in a prison.
