National Poetry Month Meets Easter...

... meets linaelyn, who posted this on her lj today and completely made my day.

See, this is the Jesus I was raised with - bearing in mind that I was raised atheist/agnostic, of course. My parents' motto was that they "tried to be good Christians, even though they didn't believe in Christ," because of the many good lessons that Christ had taught. My mother also raised me with a healthy respect for Catholic priests and nuns - at least, the Chilean variety of priests and nuns, who formed part of the only social structure in Chile that resisted Pinochet at all, despite very real threats to their lives and liberty... because they took to heart the words of some longhaired radical socialist Jew ;)

But at least they didn't do it as legislators

Jesus lived in troubled times
the religious right was on the rise
Oh what could have saved him from his terrible fate?
Separation of church and state.

Sometimes I fall into deep despair
When I hear those hypocrites on the air
But every Sunday gives me hope
When pastor, deacon, priest, and pope
Are all singing out their praises to
