- Sent this letter to Disney the other day:
I wasn’t sure who to send this to, but I wanted to send an e-mail concerning one of the staff people working at the Haunted House yesterday (May 4) around 4pm. A large group of people was waiting to go in, among them a group of kids 12-14 years of age wearing aqua t-shirts, probably part of a school group (though I don’t think there were any teachers with them). They were being a bit loud, nothing too bad, but when the door to the House opened, they started to throw their garbage (ice-cream wrappers, etc) into the bushes next to the front door. The staff person on duty asked them to stop and pointed to the garbage can, which was about a foot away from them. They continued to laugh and throw their garbage over the fence and into the bushes, so he told them they would not be permitted to enter the house, and asked them to leave.
He was very courteous, but very firm. The rest of the patrons at the door were very surprised, but in a good way; many of us said “Good for you!” and “Thank you!” to him as we went in, an one of the mothers said to her young children, “You see, even at Disney World, behaving like that is not OK and you won’t get to go on the rides if you’re going to act like that!”
Unfortunately, I don’t know the name of the staff person (I think it was Andrew) but he was working there at 4PM. He really impressed all of us there – he stayed cool and completely professional the whole time, but was very firm about not allowing the obnoxious and disrespectful behavior of one group of kids to detract from the experience of the rest of the guests. He deserves a big pat on the back for his actions. - Speaking of behaviour, we have received some very nice compliments from other parents and staff persons about our kids during our time here. They're so polite, they're so friendly, they're so nice, etc. Which is always great to hear.
On the flip side, Daniel's behaviour almost got us all kicked out of one of the parks one day(he freaked out; don't ask) and earned him a new rule (No Public Speaking EVER) on the same day. I will probably write about it once we are back home, unless the trauma is still too great and I decide to just file it under Best Never Mentioned Again. - People don't walk, yo. Ever. This deserves another huge long entry, and will probably get one someday. Because it's quite frightening. Briefly: scooters and strollers are chronic and endemic; people offer us rides for distances less than 2 walking minutes long, and non-car-related locomotion seems a foreign concept. And I'm not just talking about Florida here, because I was thinking this in Ottawa before we left.
- Can one be allergic to a state? Because we seem to be allergic to Florida, which is sad, because we really like it here. But I've had no voice for days, and all the boys have been suffering from various unidentified rashes. It's a bit distressing.
