Went biking the other day and realized at one point that I was on a new bike, carrying a new backpack, and wearing new sandals and a new sports bra/outerwear thingy. All purchased this summer.
This is heady stuff for us. My old bike was bought pre-used in 1994, so I don't know how old it was. My backpack broke a strap about three years ago, and for the last two years kept unzipping at random times. It also smelled like mildew despite multiple vinegar washes. The bra I got rid of upon purchase of new support apparel was a nursing bra. Keep in mind my youngest is almost nine years old. My old sandals were relatively new, just bought last year, but they'd given out about a month ago and I'd had to hold them together with a staple.
We're still not used to having enough money to replace old, broken stuff. We've lived with tears and bumps and worn patches for so long that now that we can replace things, it's still a thrill every time.
I'd still rather have my mom back, rather than all this shiny new stuff bought in large part on the proceeds of selling her house, but I still try to be thankful for the new stuff nonetheless.
