Ode to Boredom
Oct. 6th, 2008 04:58 pmChris does science with the boys on Mondays, and he always tries to make it as interesting and meaningful as possible. They have grown plants, grown bugs, built a Green Cone, dissected various animals, etc. And they like science day, but Justin at least is not terribly good about showing it. He can be a bit of a pain when it comes to actually doing work, instead of complaining and goofing off and yawning. Daniel's not so bad, but Justin can really kill even the most pleasurable activity with his attitude.
Chris puts up with it. But he's started to get rather impatient with them. And I? Started to get mildly irked a while back, then annoyed, then impatient, then, eventually, angry.
We had a talk last week. And decided that, as Chris is really going above and beyond to make things interesting and getting little or no positive response for his efforts, maybe what he needed to do was to simply stop trying.
So today, the boys got a lecture on microbiology. No hands-on activity, no experiment, no pretty pictures, no discussion, no going online to watch videos. Just Chris talking and writing words on the whiteboard, and them taking notes.
Joy.
Sadly, his ear infection started acting up and he had to go to bed, so they were not subjected to the full day of academic tedium he'd envisioned. Still, if their attitude right now is anything to go by, hopefully next Monday they'll be just a tad more appreciative of his efforts. We'll see.
