California high court upholds same-sex marriage ban

Excerpt: The California Supreme Court upheld Tuesday a ban on same-sex marriages that state voters passed in November, but it allowed about 18,000 same-sex marriages performed before the ban to remain valid.

::sigh::

Well, I can tell my kids that at least Mr. Sulu and Dory the Fish won't have to have their marriages (to other people, not to each other, or nobody would care) annulled. Still. Damn.

Think we'll go feel better by watching Sen. Gronstad of Iowa on Youtube, when he talked about what his daughter told the conservative older men at her workplace re. gay marriage: You guy's don't understand. You've already lost. My generation doesn't care. )

It's too bad that the busier you get, the less time you get to write about how busy you are ;)

  • On Saturday I saw three dear relatives from Chile who are just about the only people I would consider going to Chile to see. Nothing against Chile or its people; it's just bloody far away. The visit was way too short, because we caught them in the airport between one flight and another, but it was wonderful to see them in what little time we had. And amazing how, despite not having seen them for ten years, they were pretty much exactly as they were last time I saw them, grey hair notwithstanding.

  • The boys have been on each others' nerves all. freaking. day. I may have to throw them into a padded room and lock the door tomorrow, and see which one is still around by nightfall.

  • Some people seem to try really really hard to dispel any lingering delusions of decency that any of their acquaintances may have about them. It's interesting to watch, in a train-wreck kind of way. ::sigh::

  • I hurt. We've gone to TKD three nights in a row, all of them pretty heavy tournament-oriented sessions. Taking tomorrow night off.

  • Justin's being tested for learning-disability-type stuff. He tells me part of the testing is interview questions:

    "So then she asked if I met a fairy and she said she'd give me three wishes, what would I wish for? I said 'An end to poverty, global warming, and racism.' She said 'That says a lot about you. Most kids ask for this or that video game, or lots of money.'"

    "That would almost put an end to war," said Daniel when Justin told him, later. "All you'd have to wish for would be an end to sexism and hunger then."

    "Well I only had three wishes, Daniel," Justin pointed out.

  • I really, really liked the new Star Trek movie. Even when it was really, really silly :)
