Copied from a whooole lotta folks:
- I'm a mom. I have two little boys who are the light of my life and the bane of my existence. Daniel and Justin give meaning to my life and joy to my soul and I have no idea what I would do without them. They also drive me around the bend on a regular basis and make me wonder why in the name of god anybody would ever spawn unless they really, really, really wanted to.
- I home school Daniel full-time, Justin one day of the week. In part because I believe that, as my friend Sarah says, people should not be mass-produced. In part because as Daniel's JK teacher once said, "He's not very good at groupthink."
- I'm a law student, sort of. Notsomuch this year, as I only go in once a week. But I love learning about law, sifting through cases, figuring out how it all works. And no, I have absolutely no freaking idea what I'll want to practice once I leave school. Legal drafting is incredibly cool. Environmental law also sounds interesting. As long as it doesn't involve defending chemical factories who dump into wetlands and school grounds.
- I was a teacher in my previous life. Taught high school computers for four years, mostly in prisons in and around Kingston. Still have enormous respect for teachers, but did not personally have the dedication and passion to stick it out for life. Being a teacher during Mike Harris' reign in Ontario also kinda... well. Let's just say I wasn't the only teacher to get completely demoralized and decide to pack it in.
- I'm married to a wonderful man with a crappy job. Chris and I have been together for 11 years, and he's been a clerk or resident for almost six of them. There's some damned good reasons why doctors have pretty high rates of divorce. 'Nuf said.
- I'm a born-again atheist. Raised as such, have always been intensely curious about spirituality and religion, called myself agnostic for about twenty years, and went back to my childhood non-faith after my mother died in 2004.
- I'm a bit on the granola side of politics, the environment, general outlook on life. I think part of that comes with the territory of being Canadian. Even our most right-wing pols (and we have plenty) look a little pinko in the right light.
- I'm Hispanic, for whatever that's worth. Which is not much in Canada, generally; there's not really enough of us to make up a decent minority. Although there's more of us now than when I was growing up.
I once heard a comedian with a name like Pablo Ortiz say "Everybody has an ethnic group, but what's mine? White-looking, white-sounding hispanics with hispanic names? That's nobody, that's just me, Emilio Estevez, and the Menendez brothers." Hey! Me too! - I've written some stuff. Fanfic, almost exclusively in the Law & Order fandom, plus a wee bit of Harry Potter and a couple of spectacularly bad X-Files blips that thankfully never saw the light of day.
- I ::heart:: choral music. Have sung in six choirs in my life, including the St. Mary's Cathedral choir in Kingston. Yeah, that was me in the loft, singing Alleluia and Kyrie and Agnus Dei and all that, every blessed Sunday. I mentioned being curious about faith? My current choir is Harmonia Choir of Eastern Ottawa, and you can actually see a picture of me on their site. I'm the blur on the far, far left, with my very white arm hanging kind of disembodied in the darkness.
