Hallelujah
Apr. 26th, 2006 11:33 pmHad a choir-Zen experience tonight. The current line-up's going well, plus or minus a few bits. We have one piece that I keep thinking is the nadir of Canadian choral composing, but then I remind myself of one atrocity I sang in Kingston where the lyrics included "The people drink the water and they get born wrong wrong wrong/And the frogs, the frogs are dying." Anyway, near the end of the rehearsal, we were all feeling pretty much OK, not great, not bad, somewhat eager to go, it's late, yadda yadda - and then a new piece of music gets passed out. And people who haven't received it are saying things like, "Another one?" while those who have theirs already are looking surprised and pleased. I hear "Shrek" and "Leonard Cohen" a couple of times, then get my own copy.
Hallelujah, by Leonard Cohen, choral arrangement as heard on Shrek.
Huh.
"Do you guys mind, let's just sight-read through it once, it's as an encore piece in case we're asked..."
"Yeah, sure, OK," and then we're all scanning through, many people with their coats already on, but everybody looking quite interested. And the piano starts. And so do we.
And it was... lovely. Spontaneous, touching, and breathtaking, and just...
Wow. It was one of those "this is why I'm in choir" moments, with smiles on everybody's faces and the giddy surprise of creating something so beautiful so easily.
Finished the piece and there were a few "Woo-hoo!"s here and there, and Kurt said, "So, you think we can do that one?" and got a chorus of approval, and we all headed off quite uplifted. Wonderful way to end the rehearsal.
And I really, really hope we record it someday.
