Took a long biking trip again yesterday, across Experimental Farm and down to Dow's Lake and along the Queen Elizabeth Drive. Good god, but this city's gorgeous :) :)

Quotable quotes from home

Justin: (to Chris) I'm almost exactly like you, only small.
Chris: Well, not quite, in that when I was your age I wanted to be a doctor. And you want to be a chef.
Justin: Well, if I can't be a chef, I guess I'll be a doctor instead.

Chris: So your bike's better now that it's been adjusted, isn't it, Justin? Half the work for twice the results.
Daniel: Just like you at work now!

(while watching the part of Lilo and Stitch where Nani is told Lilo will be taken away the next day)
Justin: (softly, his eyes a little bit red) I hate this part.

Quotable quotes from fanfic

He lifted his hand and surveyed its coating of seamen.

No, I won't say where it's from. Because for the most part, it's a good fic. It's just that spellcheckers are not good proofreaders.

Looky! Essay!

Order of the Phoenix and the Surprise of Gender, by [livejournal.com profile] fionn_a_bhair.
An essay of the role of women in Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince. Really cool. Basically discusses the opinions of a critic who stated that "the Harry Potter books feature females in secondary positions of power and authority and replicate some of the most demeaning, yet familiar, cultural stereotypes for both males and females."

"If You've A Ready Mind," Maya's Ravenclaw!Draco fic, is finally done. Really, really good. Very funny, with a lot of ouch ansty moments, it basically retells all six books so far with one little factoid changed: Draco gets sorted into Ravenclaw. Warning: turns slashy around book five.

  • I think she had me at this line:
"Just a minute!" he said indignantly to the old woman in green. "I need to get something cleared up, this incompetent piece of haberdashery has entirely misunderstood me-"

  • But it got better:
Clearly she was a woman of superior taste. Or lonely, of course, but whatever it was, it meant she wouldn't realise Draco was only interested in one thing.

    Her flow charts.

"I'm Hermione Granger," she whispered, beaming back at him. "It's nice to meet you."

"Nice to meet you-" and your flow charts. "Working on Charms?"

  • and then there was

"You two! Get him!" Zabini snapped.

Crabbe, Goyle and Draco all looked at him as if he was insane.

"You must be joking," Crabbe said at last. "Malfoy's been our friend for years."

"Besides," Goyle added with a glare, "I am very anti-violence. There is no excuse but self-defence - or the defence of your friends - for hurting another human being."

    "So there," Draco put in.

And if you don't feel like reading something long that eventually goes above G-rating, here's a short one that's as G-rated as you can get except for a bit of cat pee:

Cat!Harry, by Hijja (kennahijja@yahoo.com)

Excerpt: Professor McGonagall lay flat on Harry's desk, asleep with one green eye open. Her striped tail dangled from the tabletop, hooked, twitching and utterly tempting. Under the chair, Mrs Norris was scooped against Harry's discarded trousers, and mournfully licked at the scratch across her nose. The temptation of the Professor's twitchy tail had become too strong for her half an hour ago, and the ensuing scuffle had not gone well for her.

At least their on his hand. The story I remember in which that particular word was introduced the "seamen" in question were deposited in some poor female character

AAUGH!!

I read one where they dripped onto the bed. I had a sudden replay of the whole scene, re-done with an audience of very wet sailors standing around the happy couple's bed :D :D
