words and whales
Apr. 6th, 2004 01:16 pmLast Property and Contracts classes today, review only. All I've got is Legislation tomorrow and then I'm done for the year.
except for that pesky 'three exams and one paper' thingy
Since there's really not much to say about today other than ::phew::, here's a couple of links that made me smile. The first is from
bear:
phrases rarely heard on livejournal
and the second, which
bear so kindly pointed me too many moons ago, the curious story of the exploding whale.
If you only want to see the video, go here:
Whale Go Boom but be warned, you really need the sound on to get the full, um, impact of the story.
Also: yes, the whale was dead before it exploded.
And please. Don't follow the links if you're very sensitive about death or animals. Me, I live with a doctor, so I got enough exposure to dead humans that seeing dead creatures, human or animal, doesn't bother me at all. Your mileage may vary.
Later Edit:
I was there that day, on the dunes, over looking the beach. We were between the whale and parking lot. Parts flew everywhere, with some flying over our heads and as was said, one landed on a car. The owner said "Oh my God, what am I going to tell my insurance man?" He sure had a sick look on his face. It took days to get the smell out of our hair and clothes. Everything was very oily. Days before, someone had taken a chain saw and removed the lower jaw of the whale. The day they blew the whale is one day I'll always remember. I'll not do that again.

Well, okay, not here. About X miles west of here, on the coast. We don't have whales in Portland. At least, not unless you've been drinking heavily down by the riverfront...
I don't remember exactly *why* they needed structural engineers to implode the thing... er - uh, a demo crew, I mean - unless it was because hauling off parts of the carcass was actually possible, whereas moving it en toto would have been impossible. Yeah, that was it.
And I, too, want to know if that guy's insurance covers whale blubber.
Hey, the next time we get a beached whale up this way, I'll invite the whole crowd of you so we can make a day of it...
xoxo

(Dead-things note: I'm pretty immune to dead or injured humans (which doesn't mean I'm not compassionate, just that it doesn't squick me). Dead or injured animals is another story (viz my episode with the poor dead kitty back in February). However, this didn't register on my meter - although I think that if I'd been there, I probably would have been a tech squicked.)
