Sep. 6th, 2004 10:14 pmGood last day of summer vacation, despite the rather grey weather. We mostly just stayed inside and puttered, with the exception of a family walk down to Dairy Queen. We read The Hobbit, the kids played in the sprinkler a bit, we made chocolate zucchini cake, Daniel talked about Dungeons and Dragons all.day.long, and Justin ate more than half of an entire quiche all by himself. We were a little skeptical when he said he wanted thirds, but as he put it, "If I can eat three oatmeals all by myself, I can eat three quiches all by myself."
I boggle. And fear. He eats helpings that would make a longshoreman proud, and then apparently converts it all into sound and energy, because he's not fat.
Speaking of helpings, can I say (without anybody hitting me) that it's very, very nice to be able to eat treats without worrying about the diet, and, more importantly, without wanting to eat more? After so long eating mostly healthy, my body has grown accustomed to reasonable helpings and it's not a struggle to avoid that second piece of cake. I was really hoping this would happen, because it sucks to always want more food than what you're supposed to eat.

Fourteen women (thirteen engineers and one secretary) were killed at the Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal by a man who called them "fucking feminists" for daring take men's places in higher education or in the professions. He went on a shooting rampage, then killed himself. In Canada, it's still a day of rememberance and reflection on women's issues, especially violence against women.
I used to have an icon with a poppy wreath on it, but can't for the life of me figure out where I stashed it. Also time specific, for Rememberance Day (November 11).
