So Much Randomness of Things
Jul. 20th, 2003 09:23 amAnd here, in no particular order, are things floating around in my world of late:
- TC's talk of an L&O Remix Challenge. I think it would be way, way, way cool. I hope it can actually happen. Although I hadn't thought of Kyllikki's concerns before. I'm also not sure I want to see any fic I love taken over by a person who's going to make Brischo and Ray talk like they're in junior high and squirt each other with water guns or have Jack give Cliare a big fluffly teddy bear that says I luv youse Schmoopie-Poo or...
But hey, somebody who actually writes fic that bears some resemblance to what I see on screen? It would be so neat to see where different authors take fics we already know and love. IMHO. - For some reason, in the book meme I did yesterday I didn't mention one of my all-time favourite authors, Kim Stanley Robinson (Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars, The Martians, Antartica, Years of Rice and Salt). And there's no place to put him in that survey (for me), unless I made up a category called "Author who intimidates you the most."
The guy writes like he has a PhD in the most diverse subjects - computers, politics, philosophy, psychiatry, geology, history, astronomy... it's incredible. Moreover, he writes in a way that's actually interesting - to me, anyway. Twenty pages into a description of Antarctic lichen, and I'm still turning pages, fascinated. And I couldn't care less about lichen, in RL. Or cold-weather construction, or Freudian theories of personality. But somehow, when he writes about it, I care. Deeply.
I'm currently reading Years of Rice and Salt, his take on the last 700 years of history if the Black Plague had wiped out 90% of Europe's population instead of a mere 30-50%. Fascinating. Although the first story depicts a rather graphic account of the castration of a young boy by Chinese slavers, and... gah. I had to put down the book for a while. Yes, I know eunuchs were a integral part of the Chinese bureaucracy, but... ::shudder:: - On a rather happier note, we all went to see Finding Nemo yesterday. Very cute, although Chris and I had to take turns holding Justin on our laps and even taking him out of the theatre during some of the scarier scenes. Poor little guy. He was pretty excited about the whole going-to-the-theatre experience anyway, and said he definitely wanted us to do that again. "Not a scary movie, though, OK?"
- Random Justin quote, looking at Chris' hand holding his and completely hiding it from sight: "Daddy. You have GIANT hands."
- Random Chris quote: "You know, you could get an Ozzy tattoo. It would be say 'I love you' to me just as much as if you got my name tattooed on you, and if we ever split up you wouldn't have to get it removed. It would be both romantice and practical."
- Put up Chapter 5 of Promises. Phew!
- I'm apparently going to have to miss my next shrink appointment on Monday, since Daniel has to get an X-ray before he goes to the ENT dude to see what's causing a 7-month runny nose, and Justin has to see the ENT before he goes in to get tubes put into his ears on Friday. Can't say I'm sorry to miss the shrink.
