Sitting here, tidying up my CRT notes, listening to my classical music CD. Chris' dad and future stepmother gave me a set of CDs called 100 Best Classics, neatly collected into one little package and divvied up into "Uplifting" (eg Ode To Joy), "Relaxing" (eg Pachelbel Canon), "Vocal" (eg Schubert's Ave Maria), "Golden" (eg Waltz of the Flowers), "Favourite" (eg Beethoven's Symphony No. 7), and "Spiritual" (eg Hallelujah Chorus).

Nice to just sit for a little while, chilling out and taking a breather from the hectic pace of life this last week. Especially since we've got stuff to do today - buying skates for the boys, cleaning, having Guy over for dinner, readings, etc etc.

One nice thing: Chris has been going through total hell at work, but there is one tiny sliver of a silver lining. He was supposed to be on call today, but was let off without even having to ask. We figure it's the boss feeling guilty for majorly screwing him over. ::shrug:: It doesn't come close to making up for what she's done, but whatever. We'll take it.

Off to wake up Chris now :)

I'm going through my notes and loving my CRT prof right now. I've written down some of her snarky moments, like

  • "So I was the only black member of the Faculty hired in the last 20 years, which means that of course I got what I get everywhere, 'I hear that you were hired because of the affirmative action program', and I gave the same response I always give, which is 'Yeah, but it's not a very good program. I mean, they've only ever found me.'"

  • "And a woman came up to me and congratulated me not straightening my hair and having braids instead. She said 'I'm so proud of you, you're making a real statement' - I was just lazy, if bald was in I would just, you know, buff my head and go."

  • Re. Canada considering forgiving the debt of countries struck by the tsunami: "Oh how very generous of you to suspend this incredibly corrupt and damaging and disgusting system of debt repayment that you've been bleeding these people dry with for years! And what about the other countries suffering through it? How many of their people should die before you suspend this in their countries too?"

Neat lady.

Neat course, too. Right now I'm switching between reading about a "racializing on the net" (assumptions we all make that everybody is white/female, and how that affects/is affected by racism in RL) and an analysis of circumstances surrounding the death of Konerak Sinthasomphone at the hands of Jeffrey Dahmer. Then I've got readings on "passing" from black and Asian perspectives, then a comparison of the issues around mixed race and same-sex marriages. Quite a trip.
