Things you really, really don't expect to be doing some day when you first decide to become a parent: explaining the concept of fanfiction, then telling your kids the basic plot and some of the funny bits from a particularly good fanfic while skipping over one of the rather important sub-plots of same: surprisingly well-written and plot-relevant R-rated slash.

And then quickly thinking of what to say when the older one, the enthusiastic reader, asks if he can read it.

"Oh. Well, it's written for grownups, you know. Remember when I read part of the original Moby Dick to you? The version we read together was for kids, so there was a lot of action and not so much description. The original had too much description to be interesting to kids. Same here. Too much description [especially in the naughty parts] and not enough action [um... perhaps the proper word would be 'plot', because there is plenty of action]."

"Oh. Can we read some of your fanfic?"

"I'll take a look, but I don't think so. It's mostly about a show you've never seen, so you wouldn't understand it. And it's also written for grownups [what with the sex'n'booze'n'potty-mouth]"

"Oh. Can you find some fanfic we can read?"

"Sure! [and thanks to [livejournal.com profile] snarkhunter, I know where to look!]"

::boggling::

Just came back from rehearsal for our mass choir concert May 1. Good thing I went. I now know who to not sit next to during the actual concert: possibly the screechiest, most unpleasant-sounding soprano in the history of choral music. I swear if she ever joined Harmonia I would quit. OWW!!
