One of the things that struck me yesterday was how many of the 300+ folks at the Barrister exam were not doing the Solicitor exam next Wednesday. Another thing that struck me was just how tough the questions were, for a set of topics that were all things I'd actually taken in law school (civil procedure, criminal, family, public law) and was even mildly interested in. From 700 pages of notes that I'd had time to read over at least twice and even (mostly) summarize. I was also struck by the certain knowledge that what awaited me back home was seven more days and 1100 pages of notes on a set of topics that I had never taken (business law, estate planning, real estate) and held an interest for me as intense as my interest in the manufacturing process of cardboard packing boxes. Less, actually. Box factories can be cool. Corporate tax structures notsomuch.
So this morning, I called LSUC and asked if it was too late to defer my exam till November. Nope, chirped the nice lady I finally spoke to (wonder how chirpy she was by this afternoon; I cannot be the only person who wrote that thing yesterday and decided enough was enough), in fact, today's the last day to do it without penalty. Just print out form X and fax it to the Registrar, and presto voila, six more months to study, instead of seven days.
Free! Free! Free!
I really hope I passed the Barrister part, so I don't have to do it at the same time. Still, it's got to be easier taking six months to learn all this stuff instead of five weeks. I had already assumed I'd be re-doing the Solicitor because I fully expected to fail this time around, but yesterday I thought long and hard about sitting for another seven hours writing, knowing I would be failing it, and yeah, no, didn't seem like such a hot idea any more.
The boys were rather delighted. As Daniel said, "Today, the Deep Bar Exam Magic will be appeased! But tomorrow... we will take pies... forever!"
