ciroccoj: (limitations)
Every Thursday that we go to homeschool choir I marvel at the atonality and arrhythmia I have spawned. It's rather impressive.

The boys are enjoying it, though. Which is what I most wanted for them when I signed them up. It would be really great if they could also, you know, sing, or even clap in rhythm, but that will have to come in another lifetime.

And speaking of choir, yesterday was a doozy of a rehearsal for my grownup choir.

There are few things as embarrassing as being part of a first soprano section that has rearranged its seating plan this year, lost some oldtimers and powerhouses and gained some slightly shy new members, right when we're called upon to sing a piece where we soar up to a high B flat, forte (the top of our range generally being high A) and don't... quite... manage to get there. Consistently.

Which does not mean we're inconsistent about getting there. No. We've being distressingly consistent about missing it. And it's really hard to ignore the sound of six or seven women very loudly squeaking the wrong ultra-high note. ::shudders all around:: Some of the seconds started to hint last week that maybe our director should look at how necessary it is to get that particular note. Maybe we could, you know, just join the seconds on their comfy little high E?

There are few things as gratifying as being part of a first soprano section that has worked its ass off trying to get the bloody thing right during sectional practice, and being in the middle of the song as the men come back in from their sectional, and going for it - and making it.

Whoops of approval and applause from your fellow choir members sound sweeter than just about any applause on a stage :) :) :)

What does a high B flat sound like? )

Oh almost forgot: and then last night I'm telling Chris about it and he says, "One note? You've been worried about one note?!"

"Well, it's important, though."

"It's one note!"

"But that matters. In a performance. When it's supposed to be that important to the overall sound, and everybody can hear it, and..."

::amused head-shaking:: "You sound like you're more worried about that song than you are about the second half of the Bar."

"Well, no, but..."

"You better not be. 'Cause I gotta tell ya, I expect at least a B flat from you on the exam."
