Saw The Drowsy Chaperone at the NAC today. I think the boys will be quoting bits and pieces of it for a while. "WhaaAAAT?!" "A man of a thousand accents, and all of them insulting," "She was an aviatrix, which is how they said 'lesbian' back then," "Nowadays of course you couldn't get away with that sort of ethnic stereotyping on the stage; they've moved it all to Disney" are just some of the bits that will come up over and over again :)

Very funny seeing what they didn't get, though. There was an entire comparison of musicals to pornography, absently using a mop handle in a way that got a little graphic, that the high school students in the audience nearly killed themselves giggling at, and the mostly primary school age kids just sort of smiled at in puzzlement. "'Love is always lovely in the end' - am I the only one who thinks that's a little suggestive?" also went saaailing right over their heads.

The clips don't do it justice, especially as the songs are all deliberately extremely stupid and pointless, but hilariously so when you see them in context. The show is incredibly funny, and very sweet, too. Any show that can get an audience largely composed of teenagers obviously there on field trips with their English teachers to simultaneously say, "Aaaaaawww..." has something going for it :) :) :)

And you know one of the things I liked the most? In an audience made up of a whoooole lot high school students, in a show that included quite a few pretty people, impressive singers and dancers with lots of flash and OOoh!, the actor who played the Man in the Armchair - a middle-aged, overweight, mousy, campy guy - got shrieks, cheers, whistles, and a standing ovation.

If you get a chance to see this show, do so. Totally worth it :)
