I think I'd probably be pretty disappointed at first glance, in that I (a) am not an astronomer, much less an astronaut, and (b) have spent the last ten years of my life doing exactly what I vowed I would never do: "Being one of those girls who say they're going to do something important with their life, but then just end up doing nothing but having babies and wasting all of their potential."

I don't think it would take more than five minutes for my current self to make my 12-year-old self feel better, by pointing out that (a) cool as astronomy is, watching Cosmos is not the same as devoting your life to it, and (b) having babies is hardly doing nothing, and it's pretty sexist to look at the life's work of half the human race and label it "wasting potential." And true feminism is not the same as wanting women to be pseudo-men; it means being able to value equally the work of both genders, and being able to allow human beings to be who they are, regardless of what their traditional gender roles say they should be.

I think after a short talk, my twelve-year-old self would be pretty pleased :)

Don't ask why, but I'm googling "effects of lower gravity on human evolution." I find a message board where someone asked just that question while researching for a short story. Among the various replies referencing biology, physics, and works of sci-fi, comes the following reply:

You've got to remember evolutionary pressures are based on breeding success rates (balanced against viability of the offspring). In the UK, for example, the evolutionary pressure is towards less intelligent people who don't care for their offspring. That's because the state is paying the people with these characteristics to breed and then supporting their offspring.

?!

Goodness, we are a little tetchy, aren't we?
