"El toque! El toque!"

My earliest memory is of freaking out because either we or somebody we knew was going to have something horrible horrible happen to them because they were out after curfew (toque) in Santiago, shortly after Pinochet took over. I would've been almost three years old, as the coup happened on September 11 and I turned three in December.

I'm told that apparently when I freaked out it was early afternoon, and thus nowhere near curfew time, but apparently my time sense was about as sophisticated as that of most two year olds.

You know, few things can make you feel as needed - or as sad - as coming home to find your kid crying because "Mama's not home yet and I won't be able to finish my French homework without her!"

Few things can make you feel as comforted - and also sad in a different way - as coming home to your kid crying and his dad and older brother both comforting him, telling him Mama will be home late but she will be home in time to help with French, and reminding him that maybe Daniel can help with French too. And even with no help, if he just does his best, that's all his teacher is expecting from him.
