... then my polite smile and politely unenthusiastic "Uh-huh" in response to one of my classmates in Critical Race Theory class today would have said the following:

"Sweetie, it's great that you've discovered racism and discrimination - and all by yourself, too. I commend you on your transcending your young Ontarian Aryan middle-class male background and taking the time to explore the lives and situations of those less priviledged than yourself. It's wonderful that you're taking this class, it's too bad that there are only seven of us and you're the only male, you are to be congratulated on your racial/ethnic/gender sensitivity, it's great that you're engaged and involved in this class and that you constantly challenge assumptions - society's, the prof's, and even your own - we're all very very proud of you, but now please for the Love of God SHUT UP!!!!"

God, yes. It's excruciating.

I also keep thinking, you know, I didn't pay tuition for this class just to hear his half-formed thought processes. I was kind of expecting to get some pearls of wisdom from somebody who's been dealing with these issues for longer than a year or two, and whose knowledge and experience is informed by a larger source than campus newspapers.
