May. 29th, 2003 01:14 pmShortbread cookies are baking downstairs, Justin is playing Reader Rabbit while we wait for the beep, and I'm feeling verklempft.
First off, Chris' grandma is dying. This is not a surprise and it's not traumatic, because much like my own grandma, she's been going downhill for a long, long time and has been less and less "there" mentally. But it's still sad.
She will very likely die in the next 72 hours (she fell and broke her hip, and at her age and health, that means immobility and blood clots). So Chris will likely fly out to Calgary for the funeral this weekend. If she does pull through, she will be bedridden from now on and will most likely die of pneumonia within a short time.
So that's a bit of a bummer, to say the least. Chris is taking it very well - in many ways, they've all done their grieving for her in the last few years. Not much left to do at this point other than hold the funeral.
Anyway.
Not such a good morning today - tried to make shortbread cookies, but the kids were really too wired to not grab everything and fool around so we had to stop for a quick yelling break and time-out before coming back to try to finish it. They were also bickering and itching to go outside - which they didn't do, since it's raining. I think tomorrow if nobody shows up for the drop-in I'm going to take the kids for a walk in the forest. With lots and lots and lots of bug spray - the mosquitoes are out and we live in West Nile Country.
Kind of bummed out for my Toronto friends and family too. 5,000 people in SARS quarantine and Toronto back on the WHO list. Great. This'll make job-hunting in TO just peachy for those relatives of ours who are unemployed.
The kids and I did read Elfquest this morning, which was good. Chris said that he hadn't realized, until he saw how much the kids enjoyed it, just how much he always wanted to share Elfquest with his kids 'some day'. He's pretty happy that 'some day' is now :)
