So, for my own fandom therapy, and to give me something to do besides obsess over worker's comp boards and appeals to the cow tribunals, here's the full list of my 10 favourite fandom characters and why I love'em. The ones I hadn't posted yet are in red. Feel free to disregard - unless you too are seeking escape from the clutches of Administrivia.

  1. Law & Order: Rey Curtis, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] shellmidwife. I know that's probably a huge surprise to everybody ;) Dunno why, other than I have a huge soft spot for obnoxious characters whom I'd probably strangle if they were real people. Rey fits the bill very nicely. He's self-righteous, clueless, and tactless as all hell. Very little insight, and a whole lotta hubris. ::happy sigh::

He's also dedicated to his job and his family, honest to a fault, and a good friend once he's unbent a little. Which is neat, to me, because one-dimensional jerks are no fun.

Plus, from a writing perspective, he's interesting because of personal characteristics that I don't share and don't really understand, and thus get curious about. I'm not a guy, or religious, or overly self-confident. So exploring all of that is loads of fun. Plus the hubris makes writing (or reading) about him in trouble a really neat experience.

    It doesn't hurt that he's played by a good-looking actor, either ;)

  2. Law & Order: Trial By Jury,: Tracy Kibre, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] leaper182. Not much to say here, because the show is still very, very new. But I echo what a lot of people have pointed out so far: that she's tough, confident, yet able to unbend a little. Watching her in the courtroom is intriguing. And watching her interact with Kelly is neat, too. We've seen lady bosses on L&O before, but only in supervisory positions (ie, Anita and Nora) and mostly only directly supervising men. It's interesting to watch a woman working with a another woman, in a position where they're kind of equals, but not quite.

Plus, Bebe Neuwirth as not-Lilith? Hee :)

  3. Homicide: Life on the Streets: Tim Bayliss, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] shellmidwife. He's just so darn cute. And geeky. And often immature and silly. And somewhat childlike, in his idealism and enthusiasm and... I don't know, unguardedness. There's even a scene where the members of his shift leave the building and find that it's snowing, and Tim tilts his head back and opens his mouth to catch snowflakes. And every fibre of my mommy-ness kicks in.

Watching him grow and learn and become more self-assured is quite wonderful. Watching him get worn down and eventually ground down by his job, his partnership, and the basic evil of life in general, is just bloody heartbreaking. And his final scenes in the HLOTS movie... we won't even go there. Yowch.

  4. The X-Files: AD Skinner, guessed by Starstruck. What can I say. He's manly, he's butch, he's a silent hero-type. He comes fully equipped with a shiny head, specs, and pecs. He can ream out his underlings like nobody's business, but he can also deliver the line "this is where you pucker up and kiss my ass" with perfection while defending them. He can strip onscreen and not look silly wearing tighty whities, and he can mouth a dirty word to himself and make you feel it to your core.

He's also probably the only male character in the history of television who can sit in a bubble bath drinking wine and answer the question "What are you doing?" with "I'm sitting in a bubble bath drinking wine" with complete manly aplomb.

And ::looking over my various word choices (manly, butch, fully equipped, shiny head, pecs, ream out, kiss my ass, underwear, dirty words, bubble bath):: I believe I may have read one too many NC17 fics starring him.

    Hm.

Anybody know where I can find more?

  5. Harry Potter: Draco Malfoy, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] bear

Although I'm way more into fanon!Malfoy than canon!Malfoy. In the books and movies, he's a snotty condescending bigoted lying mean SOB with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. In fanon, he's written in a million ways, from canon to complete saccharine sweetie to everything in between. I tend to like the ones where he's more nasty than nice, but has a smidgen of decency somewhere deep inside. Like, really deep. Maybe somewhere near his spleen.

Also: he always gets the best lines. Sarcastic, mocking, a little bit mean. A lot mean, sometimes. My kinda humour ;)

Eg: "Malfoys never flatter ourselves. We have fawning sycophants to do that for us."

  6. Star Trek: The Next Generation: Geordi Laforge, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] leaper182. What can I say? I like 'em shy, geeky and socially inept.

Actually, Geordi wasn't really that socially inept, unless it came to romance. Perfectly self-assured as an engineer, commander, diplomat, whatever; all thumbs when it came to impressing the ladies. Horrible taste, too; if I remember right, he had a crush on a holodeck simulation of a real scientist, a dead chick, and a girl who almost turned into an invisible glowy thing. He always made me want to feed him some soup when he tried to get involved with anyone, cause you knew it just wasn't gonna be pretty.

  7. Oz: Augustus Hill, guessed by nobody ;) Augustus, the narrator for the first five seasons, totally brought the show together. Really can't describe it better than that. When he died, the show kinda died too. The last season was still very good, and the idea of bringing back dead characters (including Augustus) to narrate was pretty cool, but it just wasn't the same.

He was amazing. He reminded me of some of guys I met inside. Wicked sense of humour, pretty optimistic despite lots and lots of crap in his life, and firm principles, despite the fact that he'd done stuff that warranted being put away for life.

Plus, Harold Perineau is kinda nummy too :) Although I must admit it still feels a little strange to see him braidless and walking around the island in Lost.

  8. Star Trek: Voyager: Harry Kim, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] shellmidwife. 'Cause he's so cute!! And he's not just a kid any more, you know!

It got so ludicrous that he was a 'kid' for seven years. Never promoted past Ensign. Always the most junior, the one who messed up because he was still little and naive... and all this despite the fact that the actor who played him was in his thirties.

I loved him for the times when he was little and naive, and for the times that he broke out of the mold. Like when he contracted a glowy STD, and told off Janeway like a teenager finally standing up to Mommy. Or the time that he and Chakotay came from the future, and he bluntly replied to the Doctor's arch little "Is there something... going on... between the Commander and [redshirt female]...?"

"They're having sex. Here, hand me that [random tool name]."

Or the time that he defended a semi-conscious Paris in The Chute. Or the time that he went mental on Paris in same.

Nice stuff. Well done. Not enough of it in seven years, though. Pity.

  9. Lord of the Rings: Legolas, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] bear. I could say that it's because I love elves of all kinds - except maybe the Santa ones - and it's true. I could say that it's because I love Tolkien elves in particular; their language, their grace, their wisdom, their beauty, their sad and gentle acceptance of the fact that their time on Middle Earth is ending. I could say that it's because Tolkien's Legolas is a really neat character; his growing friendship with Gimli, his dedication to the Fellowship and to Frodo, his presence during a war that the majority of his people avoid - all of that is very, very cool. Add in Peter Jackson's bits, like his dedication to Aragorn, and you've got a complex and fascinating character.

I could say all of that.

But really? It's the eye-candy part that does it for me. What can I say. I have a thing for tall & slender, archers, and blonds with long, flowy hair ;)

  10. Queer As Folk: Brian Kinney, guessed by [livejournal.com profile] bear. Brian Kinney a total and complete jerk. He treats friends and foes alike: like crap. He makes fun of romance, morals, principles, and anything else even remotely non-slimy. He's very, very proud to be very, very shallow, and wears his compulsive promiscuousness like a badge of honour.

He's also a sweetie when you least expect him to be. Planned a wedding for two friends (though he made fun of the whole idea and skipped out before it started). Sacrificed a lucrative advertising career to bring down a homophobic politician. Took care of various friends in various states of need, mocking them all the way.

Oddly, he does absolutely nothing for me in the attractiveness department. As I told [livejournal.com profile] bear, I may need to get my het checked, if a gorgeous intelligent intriguing guy who does other really hot guys has no effect on me whatsoever.

And yet Skinner boosts my pulse, despite nine years with only two little peeks at non-office attire/activity. Perhaps my libido operates on the Less Is More principle.

You've never seen Harold Perrineau in that one episode of L&O, did you? I believe it was called VIRUS, a Lennie&Mike era episode. Perrineau played a computer hacker.

Hee.
