Wow. Good time to live in Ontario, despite the Tories. Toronto Men Wed After Landmark Gay Marriage Ruling.

I feel like such a sap, but I actually got tears in my eyes when I read it. And GO JUDGES with declaring it the law NOW, not "when the government gets around to it, sometime in the next two years." While I normally approve of judicial deference to the legislative bodies... sometimes you just have to say, enough already.

::happy sigh::

Played soccer today. Won. Notsomuch with the mud. Fun time anyway. Good opposing team, and our defense and goalie ROCK.

Daniel, on the ride home, was doing math "puzzles" (BTW, it's utterly amazing the things people will do if they think they're supposed to be fun. I remember my LSAT coach telling us that we should rename the godawful "Logic" section the "Games" section - and by god, that did take the fear out of it, made it a lot of fun.)

Anyway. So he says, "551 plus 551 is 602."

"Actually, no," says Chris. "But you're close - you got the answer for 551 plus 51. It's really hard to do three-number addition in your head, Daniel. You'll probably be doing it on paper for a couple of years. But hey, that's really impressive, that you can do two number adding. Good for you, buddy."

Daniel mutters to himself for a while, then says, "551 plus 551 is 1102."

So I start laughing at Chris as his eyes pop out. "Yeah, a couple of years, huh? Sure, hon."

Chris says something like, "That's amazing, Daniel," and Daniel mumbles to himself for a little while longer, then says,

"1052 plus 1052 is 2104."

He scares the crap out of me sometimes, you know? I used to think we wouldn't stand a chance against him when he became a teenager. Now I think we'll be lucky to make it through elementary school.

You gotta love good old Ralphie. From the same article above: Alberta Premier Ralph Klein said he would block any attempt to impose gay marriage in his province, Canada's most conservative, by using the "notwithstanding clause" in the Constitution allowing governments to override court decisions.

"If there is any move to sanctify and legalize same-sex marriages, we will use the notwithstanding clause. Period. End of story," he said.

Ah, Ralphie. Always on a crusade to make sure Alberta remains a charming mix of half-Texas, half-Alabama, all-mouthbreathing.

::weeping:: Ohgod.

Did you notice the typo in that article, btw? Someone said something about "same-sax" marriages. So, what? A tenor saxophone can't marry another tenor saxophone?

Also, Daniel? SCARY. Congratulations.

Yeah, it's a little nuts, actually. My Happiness Anxiety is niggling that an appeal will come from the federal courts some time today. But you can bet I'll be keeping a browser open to CBC.

Yeah... I dunno, though, I can't see the Supremes overturning it. Not that they're terribly zealous about civil rights, but they'd have to be rather reactionary to overrule on this. Especially when the Big Three appeals courts (Quebec, BC, Ontario) have all ruled in the same direction.

I also can't see the Liberals making any legislative moves to overturn the decision. Who would they do it for? The ardent homophobes don't vote Liberal anyway. The biggest Liberal support base is people who don't care either way or people who are vaguely in support of legalizing gay marriages.

As for Ralphie... even putting aside niggly details about the Notwithstanding Clause, the fact is that although the administration of marriage licenses is a provincial matter, the actual definition of marriage is a federal matter. At least, that's what our Const. prof told us. So Ralph could Notwithstand till the Alberta cows came home, but it wouldn't do him any damn good.
