Date: 2005-05-02 05:22 am (UTC)The nice part was we'd just been talking about genes (dominant/recessive, how come Mama & Daniel have brown eyes & hair, Daddy and Justin have blue eyes & blond hair, etc) so I was able to explain that some people believe your genes are the most important thing about you. And that although we've told the boys that we are all part nature, part nurture, to many people the 'nature' part far outweighs the nurture, and they assume things based on your nature. Like, for example, if your skin is dark, they assume you must be lazy/stupid/inferior/etc. Or if your parents are Jewish, even though you yourself may believe in Christ, since your genes are still Jewish, you're still dishonest/sneaky/etc.
Daniel asked a bit about Hitler (?!), and I think he got it, a bit. At least, he was able to tie it in to his original question and answer for himself why, in the world of Harry Potter, the fact that Hermione Granger is Muggle-born is still more important to some people than the fact that she's a very good witch.
Justin remainded puzzled. He didn't understand the whole 'Jews are all sneaky' 'blacks are all dumb' thing. I think it has to do with being five, and being surrounded by a lot of colour in his daily life. The concept of generalising large group of people based on appearance or some other random trait is a little nonsensical to him, I think.
Have I mentioned how glad I am that my kids are growing up in Ottawa?
