Politicians being decent. Odd concept, that. Politicians declare brief ceasefire to honour VE-Day veterans.

You know the special language of shared quotes? I miss that with my mom. Most of ours were in Spanish, and there's nobody around who would be able to understand them even if I explained them.

Funny how you really can't explain some things, because they're just so personal that nobody else gets them. Like Chris and I, when we do our "It's all right, I'm OK!" "Whaat?" exchange. It's from an X-Files ep (door prize if you can name it) where Mulder and Scully are looking through an empty house, separately. Mulder disturbs something and there's a godawful crash, something nearly flattens him but he's safe, he recovers and calls out reassuringly, "It's all right! I'm OK!" in order to prevent Scully from dropping everything and running to his rescue, as she no doubt will because she's over-protective like that. And in the distance, you hear Scully's faint voice answer back "Whaat?" and realize that she had no idea there was even anything to worry about because she had better things to do with her time than worry about Mulder's safety.

We must have seen that ep maybe three times, almost ten years ago. And yet we still quote it.

It's neat to be building a shared language with the kids. Daniel is quite enamoured with the phrase "Nooobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!" right now, as well as a few other Monty Python quotes. He doesn't really get a lot of it, but he gets more than I would expect from an 8 year old.

And I may have done a bad thing with the quotes the other day. I was explaining the Spanish Inquisition (and somehow we started talking about Good Omens somewhere in there) and then [segue here, don't know how it went] we flipped through my collection of other people's lj icons that I really like.

He giggled at
of course. Chortled at
having seen both LOTR and The Princess Bride. Thought the one icon that really, really gives me icon envy
was very cute. Laughed at
and almost lost it with .

All well and good. But then he wanted to know the story behind one that I hadn't meant to show him and didn't click past fast enough for him to miss it, as I had with [livejournal.com profile] kalio_plaid's hilarious .

He saw this one: . Wanted to know what was up. I explained that the words were from a song that's not appropriate for children, about somebody who likes big bums, except they say butts, which isn't as polite as bums, and it was a song I would not want him to sing it at school, and then I said See, it's funny because this person took a really beautiful and sensitive screenshot of Aragorn, who's a hero and very serious character, and it's probably a shot of him gazing at Arwen, whom he loves, and it's all very lovely and then they put the words (dropping into mock-rap) "I like big BUTTS-" and at this point Daniel lost it utterly. He literally collapsed onto the floor laughing and couldn't stop. And I really, really should've remembered that Daniel is at an age where there are few things as hilarious as bums. Because for the rest of the day, every so often he was chanting "I like big BUTTS and I cannot LIE!" and getting the giggles again.

Gosh I hope we don't get a call from the school over this.

AHAHAHAHAHA! I occasionally have the same problem with Icons & teh Kiddoes. I once had to try and explain this one here above to the younger one of my kids (YK was six at the time). I was gracefully dancing around the fact that I write about these characters, and sometimes an author asks the characters to do something to forward the story-line, and the Characters say "Pardon me, but I really don't wish to do that! Not my cuppatea, y'know?"

YK asked, "What sort of things don't they want to do?"

Before I could respond, 10 year old EK piped up from the other room, "Boys kissing each other."

"Oh. Okay," replied YK and asked for the next icon, with such an "eh, so what." attitude that I just left it at that. Because really, isn't that the summation of slash writing, right there?

Don't worry, BTW. You handled this above, perfectly. My kids love the "Nemo" one, too. The school knows how to handle little kids singing inappropriate lyrics, and you've explained to Daniel that it's not something to do at school. School will just figure he's occasionally exposed to modern Western society and its media.

They have no idea. ;-D

LOL!

Isn't it nice to have kids who don't freak out at that kind of thing?

I'm rather ashamed of myself that I can't quite place that XF quotation ... mostly because there are too many episodes like that to narrow it down. :)

Ha! One of the best episodes ever. My mom and I still joke about the apparent correlation between West Virginia and copious amounts of velour.
