As the wonderful Kipler says in The Elements of Phyle, spellcheckers are not proofreaders. Both "shiftless" and "defected", when used in a formal essay, should be carefully eye-checked. Unless you're consciously going for profanity and/or potty humour.

Just sayin'.

In kinda the same same---not a misspelling, but an incorrect word choice.

"After her husband collapsed at the Battle of Monmouth, Molly Pitcher mounted his cannon and contined to fire bravely at the British."

Change that second same to 'way'---my blooper is I can't type! :)
