Literally.

Ban gay marriages: Pope

Gays hit back at Vatican

People are idiots.

Later Edit:

As if we needed further evidence:

"United Way Charity Suspends Scout Grants Over Gays"

I was so impressed that the Cradle of Liberty Council defied the national ban on gay leaders, especially because they're the third-largest council in the States. I shouldn't have been surprised that they wouldn't be allowed to get away with it. Here's a quote from the article:

"The Cradle of Liberty Council, which serves 87,000 youths in Philadelphia and its Pennsylvania suburbs, defied national leaders in May by adopting its own nondiscrimination policy toward gays.

But the group later rescinded the policy and agreed to oust an openly gay scout after the Irving, Texas-based national council threatened to revoke its charter."

So the United Way, which has an antidiscrimination policy, has decided to suspend their grant.

Makes me glad that what we've got Daniel involved in apparently has the following credo:

"Scouting is a world wide, multi cultural movement. We welcome people to membership regardless of gender, race, culture, religious belief, sexual orientation or economic circumstances. Youth members are strongly influenced by the behaviour of adults. We need to be sensitive to the traditions and beliefs of all people and to avoid words or actions which "put down" anybody." You can say all you want, but once meet someone you like who turns out to be gay, or someone you've known for years comes out to you, it's an ENTIRELY different situation. Because then no longer are you denying rights to this bunch of gay people, you're denying writes to your daughter, or nephew, or uncle.

Actually, I've found it distressing how often that doesn't hold true. So many people just don't make the connection between their son or brother or best friend and whatever political stance is going to screw up their lives. Like the guy who was firmly pro-Reform when Reform was all about getting rid of immigrants... and his girlfriend was a Chinese immigrant, as were most of his friends. Or my mother-in-law, who still makes fag jokes despite the fact that her son (my partner) is bi. Or even my parents, who badmouth immigrants despite the fact that they are immigrants themselves.

People are idiots.

I really can't get upset over it. It's not like the Vatican would ever let this go or actually support gay marriage. I mean, come on. It's so not worth getting upset over something that will never change.

I dunno, the Church has spun on its head a number of times in the past, under the leadership of an openminded Pope. Too much to hope for under the current one, of course. ::sigh::

Yeah I guess you're right. But it's something that no one but the Church would be able to change and to be completely honest - maybe I'm just overly cynical - but the Roman Catholic Church will never support homosexuality unless they throw out those fundementalists in charge. And we all know how likely that is.

I had a long talk with my mom about that last night. She's completely nuts over it because of course, this is her career - she's in a position where she can't just talk about how against the Vatican she is in this situation.

But I think the biggest difference is the knowing someone who's gay. You can say all you want, but once meet someone you like who turns out to be gay, or someone you've known for years comes out to you, it's an ENTIRELY different situation. Because then no longer are you denying rights to this bunch of gay people, you're denying rights to your daughter, or nephew, or uncle.

Before I came out to myself, it felt weird meeting someone who was gay. I never had any issues with them in general, but once I put a familiar face on it, it was like some kind of enlightenment.

But like I said yesterday... I really can't get upset over it. It's not like the Vatican would ever let this go or actually support gay marriage. I mean, come on. It's so not worth getting upset over something that will never change.
