Blackouts are interesting. I was on the road when it happened, trying to get to my doctor's office. I think I got past the first traffic light on Baseline before they all went out. I thought it was just a Baseline problem until I went onto Bank and realized it was everywhere. Turned on the radio and lo & behold, all of Ottawa and Smiths Falls is out. Scanning through radio stations, gradually getting more and more of the story as I waited an eternity on Bank street. Gee, it's not just Ottawa. It's also Toronto and North Bay and upper New York state and... oh, my, New York City and Detroit and holy crap Sudbury where there's miners stuck underground and New Jersey and Connecticut and what the hell's going on?

Very exciting. Had my doctor's appointment in his office, not exam room, as the examination rooms are windowless. One guy in a wheelchair couldn't go up the elevator to the office or up the stairs, so he had his appointment at the bottom of the stairwell, with people going past. His doc (one of my doc's partners) wondered if he could charge OHIP extra for an "out of office visit" :) My doc didn't think so.

Found out my hemoglobin was at 98 the day I finally went to get help, and my ferratin level was 8. Normal minimal levels are 115 and 40, respectively. At 90 hemoglobin, they start giving you transfusions if you're symptomatic (dizzy, tachycardic, weak, etc). I felt fine.

I think we got power back around 5am, and there are still houses out on our street. Fun fun fun.
