Have you ever read a fic so bad you seriously considered giving up on a fandom?

Have you ever read a fic that descended from that level of badness to a level so low that you seriously considered giving up on fic in general?

Have you ever read a fic that bad, that got so many gushing reviews that you seriously considered giving up on the idea of "People = Sentient Beings" in general?

No, I won't link to it. It's just that awful.

I hate it when you do this, because I always want to see the fic in question. ; )

No, see, trust me, you wouldn't want to see this one. For many fics there's a sort of horrified fascination, or you can MST3K them, or they just end up being hysterically funny, or something... but this one is just plain sad. And stupid. And icky.

::snicker:: Well, I'll echo what I replied to her:

Ah well. Since you've read it and I haven't, I'll just have to trust your judgement on this one.

Okay, let me just say that *I* for one do NOT want you to link to it.

But I *do* want you to reassure me that I'm not going to stumble across it in Pirate Fandom. :-)

Ah, happily, that's a great big NO.

Unless the writer decides to do one of those classy fic-switcheroo/self-plagiarism jobs and just subs in "Jack" for "Harry" and "Black Pearl" for "Hogwarts." You'll know you've come across it if 'Jack' starts obsessively using everybody's full names (middle initial included), springs a formidable intellect and noble lineage from outta nowhere, and goes into a long soliloquy about One True Love, ending inexplicably in a long string of expletives followed by much sobbing.

... OK, that last part might not happen, since the expletives and sobbing came from me while I was reading this masterwork, and YMMV. Still. If you do come across it, back away slowly, and once you're a few feet away, run like hell.

Those who will read a story without a good-authority recommendation are incredibly brave. I'll only touch something if I've got a rec from someone I've ascertained is either a good writer or someone with good taste.

I do still run into stinkers sometimes, though. Not like what you're talking about, but enough to make me sad for the English-speaking world.

...done that, got a closetful of tee shirts!

And yes, you must link to this!

We now have a House MST community, which is hysterical...plus sad.

Hey, I want a t-shirt too! Although this particular gem is more like sweatshirt level, y'know?

And yes, you must link to this!
Ah, no, see, really it's unlinkable. A lot of badfic is actually really entertaining in a train-wreck kind of way, but this thing was just plain pathetic.

LOL yeah, I bet.
