What's funny is I was doing that for hobby-reading for years before I suddenly clued in that it might work for academic writing as well. Duh. I don't know how much it helps the quality of the work, but it sure saves time when you're not continually reading through the entire essay all the time, wasting time scanning twelve times over that three-paragraph section you wrote perfectly the first time and will probably never change. It's also very encouraging, watching how the bad colours slowly slowly get replaced by the good ones.

Hee, I did. I had a bath, ate Greek takeout, then went to sleep for twelve hours. Sheer bliss :)
