OK, maybe somebody out in lj-land can help me out with this one...

I'm in the middle of a rather odd exchange with somebody from Student Finances, and I think I'm being unusually dense but for the life of me I can't imagine what it is that this person wants me to do.

If anybody's feeling bored and wants to drop me a line re. this, here's my correspondence so far, with the other person's e-mails in red. And yes, I know my e-mails are a bit snippy in tone after the first one. I tried to figure out a non-snippy way of saying stuff, but then mentally shrugged and let it go out as is.

Hello!

I checked my account status in December, before going to pay my Winter term tuition, and discovered that it showed that I hadn't paid the Fall tuition yet. I was pretty sure I had, so I contacted my bank to see if they had any record of a payment, because I didn't want tuition money that was supposed to pay for Winter term to be put towards paying for a Fall term I had already paid for.

I finally got a statement from my line of credit showing that there was a payment made out on August 23, 2006, to Ottawa University , in the amount of $2,493.90, with confirmation number XXXXXXX.

I'm fairly sure that's my Fall tuition, though the figure quoted below is different ($3,432.00). I'm not sure where to go from here. I would like to pay my Winter tuition before it accumulates even more interest, but don't want to pay twice for anything, and would like to not pay for interest on the Fall term if it turns out that I had already paid for it.

Do you know who I can go to, to get help for this?

I'm not sure what other information you need from my bank... it was paid online and we got a receipt for it, with the information I gave you. Should I send a copy of the bank statement?

As to the amount paid, as indicated in my first e-mail, it was:

I understand, but I'm not sure how to get you that information. For example, do you need to speak to somebody at my bank, or do you need a letter from them, or a copy of my bank statement?

I understand that part. What I need to know is which information you need. I cannot go to the bank and tell them "Ottawa University requires the information for the following payment" if I do not know what kind of information you require.

Hmmm, not sure here, but maybe you could ask the bank for any "transaction details" on this particular um, transaction. It does seem like this P. Trudeau is not quite getting it.

Perhaps she's looking for something called the transit number? Or maybe she wants to know if the bank sent the payment electronically, and if so, which account # for the U of O they sent it to? I imagine there's some sort of electronic routing slip, so to speak...

My guess is that they're wanting the method of delivery: check (whether it's a personal check or certified funds, check number), electronic funds transfer, etc.

If your payment was made by cheque, your bank can provide a copy of its face and back, evidencing both provision and receipt of payment. They can also, for a small fee of course, provide a copy of your bank statement for the period in question. You should be able to print off a copy of the transactions on the relevant date for free, by going online. To obtain anything out of the ordinary, you'll need to provide your bank with a formal letter of request. If none of those steps works, get your lawyer to write the manager of your branch a letter, together with an affidavit sworn by you and including copies of everything you can get your hands on. If all else fails, put on your best black suit and heels, pretend you're a lawyer and hunt down Pierrette. SHE's your problem, not the bank.

my (limitted) understanding with banks and electronic payments is that depending on who they pay, they may have different methods of transferring funds. call your banks info # and tell them the transaction date and confirmation # and that the payee is disputing that they got the $$. ask the bank what you need from them to convince the payee that the $$ indeed left your bank and travelled to ottawa u's bank. ask if a paper copy is possible... forward that to the lovely madelle pierrette trudeau, and then ask her (politely) to take that, roll it up, and smoke it.
