ciroccoj: (cynical)

My Subject line is a Spam header. All I need is something about Ron Jeremy and selling my timeshare and I'll be spam-filtered out of everyone's flist.

This week just seems to be rushing and dragging at the same time. Does that make sense?

Last week was an abbreviated home schooling week, seeing as how Monday was Labour Day and Tuesday was the (Not) Going Back To School Picnic. So this week we plunged into school... only to get a bit sidetracked as I tried to figure out the David Suzuki Foundation (DSF) project, and tried to see whether I could drop any of my other courses, and got into the January course I wanted, and then had a friend's life go completely nuts, and and and.

Highlights:
  • Got the project with DSF! Went for a meeting this morning with the person I'm going to be working with. Looks very cool.

Well... cool for law geeks. I think non-law geeks would probably glaze over a bit if I tried to explain it. So I won't.

  • I can drop one of my other courses and still finish my credits by the end of February!

  • This is a Very Good Thing. Not as good as the DSF thing, which had me jumping up and down for a while, but Good nonetheless. Because I went to my one and only actual law class (Human Rights in International Law) for the first time on Monday, and my notes consist of the following:

Origins of concept of "Human Rights"
    - natural law v. human construct
    - see prof's PowerPoint notes
    - Jesus f*** I need to drop this course whether I get into the 3155 project or not. Must. Will cry otherwise. I am too freaking old for this.
    - dropping this like a stone. Or a hot potato. A hot potato made of stone.

In between the PowerPoint note realization and the MustDropNow came a sinking moment: Oh, hello, Angry Young Cynic.

Angry Young Cynic (AYC) was in my Civil Liberties class last year. He looks to be in his mid-twenties, and apparently, he has Seen. Seen, man. Seen the ugliness, the futility, the impossibility of change and growth in this world. Seen ManPerson's inhumanity to ManPerson. Or at least, he's read about it, and he is Scarred. Scarred, I tell you, by the despair, and yet somehow (lucky us) he still finds the strength to share his Scars, and the things he's Seen or divined about just how ugly Man Person can be, with an ironic twist to his lips and his eyes squinted cynically just so. And the rest of us are fortunate to be recipients of his worldly experience, his disillusionment, his insight into the abyss and his uncanny ability to pierce through our hypocritical self-congratulatory intimations of hope for the human species and show us Whaddup; WhadReallyup.

Oh, sweetie, get over your bad self and shut the hell up.

I was already kinda iffy on the course, because although it looks like a lot of fun and the prof seems neat, it's more theory-oriented than I care to go at this stage in my degree. AYC clinched it for me.

  • I'm testing for my yellow belt at the end of the month! So is Daniel, and I assume Chris and Justin are too. Though I'm not entirely sure about Justin.

  • This week's Music goal was supposed to be a review of the boys' piano theory and lesson books, which they haven't picked up since June. Didn't happen; instead we ended up listening to the entire recording of Les Miserables, discussing the story, history, musical themes, social justice, comic relief (comparing the Thenardiers and Gavroche), self-doubt and resolution (Who Am I v. Javert's Suicide), props and stage tricks, voice ranges, etc. etc.

We'll do the piano books next week :)

  • Then there was personal stuff, mostly from friends, that left me a bit drained.

  • My computer keeps getting buggered. Yahoo suddenly slows to a crawl, livejournal and other sites are sluggish, and I have to run AdAware three or four times to clear it. And then it clears - for about ten minutes before buggering again.

  • ...aand my sleeping meds are kicking in.

  • If I were to write a totally Gen HP fic with rating PG13 or at most R for language, would anybody be interested in betaing? If the question sounds tentative, it's because I'm currently writing something, but have no idea if I will ever post it, and am thus not looking to line up definite beta-type people. Just seeing if anybody would be interested.

ROFLOL about the AYC. I've had classes with that kid, several of them (both kids and classes.)

(Enough acronyms for you? *g*)

LOL! Aren't they a treat? Don't know about you, but every utterance from them makes me feel about ten years older ;)

I'm interested in beta reading anything you write! If my husband's work doesn't end up kidnapping him again the very same week you're ready to send it out, I should totally be up for it. :)

::squeeing and jumping up and down:: Cool!

Like I said, I don't know if I'll ever be posting it... but it is steadily growing and looking like it might someday see the light of day.

Heh. It's from a postcard I bought when Daniel was a baby. We taped it to one of our kitchen cupboard doors, where we could look at it for inspiration on those days when really the loftiest goal you could aspire to as a parent was not killing the kid. It helped ;)
