In today's class, our prof asks if anyone can describe the legal system in Zimbabwe. I put up my hand and give a brief summary of a demoralized judiciary: judges being harrassed and intimidated into resigning or fleeing the country, new judges being appointed solely to rubber-stamp the government's proposals and human rights abuses, rule of law breaking down, yadda yadda yadda.
Prof: So basically, to paraphrase Dr. McCoy, It's law, Jim, but not as we know it.
Class: ::groans:: ::laughs::
Student: Which one is Dr. McCoy?
Prof: From Star Trek.
Student: ::looks puzzled::
Me: Not from the readings. From Star Trek.
Prof: He used to say "It's life, Jim, but not as we know it."
Student: ::still puzzled::
Me: To Jim Kirk. The Captain.
Student: Oh! You mean like the Beam Me Up thing? That show?
Prof: Yeah. That show.
