  • Anybody want some apples? We went apple picking last week and we're kinda up to our ::ahems:: in apples here. They're great apples, really, just, you know, not for every single meal. We've made apple muffins, and chicken & apples, and tuna & apple wraps, and potato & apple frittatas, and we've lobbed them at every child who's come into our home and we will be making apple pies, and spinach & apple salad, and squash & apple soup, and apple gravy and oh mercy.

Then again, we were able to make about three metric tons of strawberries disappear in the spring without too much upset, so I suppose we will overcome the Great Apple Deluge as well.

  • The boys have been listening to our two new Arrogant Worms CDs to the point where tbh I'm beginning to get a little sick of them. I'm really glad they got to see them in concert, but am starting to wish we'd taken them to see an act with a slightly less catchy tunes. I'm tired of waking up with "Big Fat Road Manager" already stuck on perma-repeat in my head.

The Worms were really pretty amazing, though, as an act. They're far more of a comedy act than a band. I felt kinda sorry for them, though - they were onstage at a campground, so there was no illumination whatsoever on the audience. They kept making jokes about it. "It's like we're singing for... tar." And at one point one of them said, "You know, this is like every comedian's worst nightmare. Whenever we pause, if you listen, you can hear..." and we're all quiet, and some people start to chuckle, "Crickets! You literally hear crickets chirping!"

Anyway, here's a song that we very much enjoyed when they sang it, and have been singing it a little too often for my taste. Especially as the old Laurentian High School property near our place is finally looking like there's going to be development soon. Smart!Centres (loathe that name, BTW) hopes to start building their shopping monstrosity sometime soon. Time to move!

    The squirrels gathered nuts,
The sun shone on the leaves,
    The fragrance of the flowers,
    Sweet in the gentle breeze
    The birdies were all singing,
    But they're not any more…
'Cause I dug the whole thing up
And built a Big Box store!

    Big Box store,
    It's my Big Box store,
    Comin' here makes it clear
    What life's worthy living for!
    Big Box store,
    It's my Big Box store!
    It's big!
    It's a box!
    It's my Big Box store!

It's as if a football field
    Made love to a mall,
And the baby that they had
    Is my sweet suburban sprawl,
    Whose parking lot is bigger
    Than the downtown it destroyed
    Come on and enjoy
    Shopping on steroids!

    At my Big Box store,
    It's my Big Box store!
    Its rectangulated beauty
    Is sure hard to ignore!
    Big Box store,
    It's my Big Box store!
    It's big!
    It's a box!
    It's my Big Box store!

It's got toys - from China!
    And TVs - from China!
    And knick-knacks - from China!
    And lamps - from China!
    And clothes - from China!
    And china - from China!
    And employees from Mexico!

So grab your Big Box wife,
And your growing Big Box kids,
And get some Big Box stuff,
To shove into your Big Box fridge.
If livin' large is what you want,
    We got what you need!
    So buy a dozen sofas,
Or a ten-pound bag of cheese!

    At my Big Box store,
    It's my Big Box store,
You'll come out with lots of stuff
You did not come in for,
    Big Box store,
    It's my Big Box store!
    It's big!
    It's a box!
    It's my Big Box store!

    At my Big Box store,
    It's my Big Box store,
How can you ever have enough
When there is so much more?
    At my Big Box store,
    It's my Big Box store,
    It's big!
    It's a box!
    It's my Big Box store!

    Yeah! All right!
    One for one!
    Thank you!
    Take that Nature! Yeah!

Too bad there's no easy way to trade some of your apple surplus for my raspberry deluge!

Make applebutter or applesauce and can it. It's a good way to use some of them up without wasting them or having to eat them right now.
