Tomorrow is the home schooling History Fair. The boys have been working really hard to get their projects ready. Chris had the day off today, because he thought his dad was coming to visit Tuesday-weekend, instead of Thursday-Sunday, as his dad had told him.

"So why don't I take the boys to the museum today?" he asks.

"Sure!" say I. They'll be mostly done their projects by then, and it'll be a nice break for them.

Things take a bit longer than expected, but they're still on track, and I ask him last night if he's got a lot planned for the boys today.

"Nope, mainly just the museum. And a couple other places."

"OK, 'cause they've still got their projects for the history fair. They can work on them?"

"Yeah, no problem."

So the day begins. The boys work, and around lunch time Chris goes to get them. They're a little anxious, because they're not done yet.

"Don't worry about it," I tell them, with Chris standing right next to me. "You'll have time when you get back."

Off they go.

They're away for quite a long time. I'm beginning to get anxious. Finally I call. "When are you planning on getting home?"

"Oh, in about half an hour."

"...but... are the boys not going to TKD and Cubs, then?"

"No, they're going. They'll go there from home."

"But... they still have their projects to work on."

"Oh. Really?"

....

"Yes. Their projects, for the history fair."

"When's that?"

"TOMORROW."

"Oh. I didn't know that."

"It's on the calendar. It's been on the calendar for weeks. We've been talking about it for weeks."

"Oh. Why didn't you say you wanted them home earlier?"

"Because you were standing right next to me when I told the boys they would have time to work on their projects when they got home!"

"I didn't hear you."

"And the fair has been on the calendar for weeks!"

"I didn't know. Why didn't you tell me? I told you I was going to take them to the museum and then to the sports store and to get their rainjackets." (the rain jackets part, btw, no - he'd told me of the sports store and 'a couple other places' which I assumed meant quick stops, what with the fair and all)

"But I thought you knew you had to be back home! YOU WERE RIGHT NEXT TO ME!!"

::calm soothing breath, calm soothing breath::

I realize this is not his fault and I need to be more explicit, and I usually try to be because he has no sense of time and is often unable to hear anything that is not directed right at him. This is not typical male selective hearing, this is brain injury related. I know this. I shouldn't get angry at him.

But FFS!!! I HAD IT ON THE CALENDAR. I REMINDED HIM. WE HAVE TALKED ABOUT IT FOR WEEKS. I TOLD HIM THE BOYS STILL HAD WORK TO DO. I TOLD THE BOYS THEY COULD WORK ON THEIR PROJECT WHEN THEY GOT HOME WHILE HE WAS STANDING RIGHT NEXT TO ME. AND IT'S STILL MY FAULT BECAUSE "WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME THEY HAD TO BE HOME??!!"

Brain injury on top of selective male hearing - that's gotta be tough! *sends sympathetic vibes*
