Right, so, remember my kids took part in a home schooling history fair a while ago? Their display consisted a bunch of Roman things they'd made during the year (a Roman road, a mosaic, and a list of things we got from the Romans), a few Byzantine projects (a decorated egg and an icon), and two small books each: "Religions" and "Empires" by Justin, and "The Fall of the Roman Empire" and "Great Buildings" by Daniel. They also wore togas, and were on hand to answer any and all questions thoroughly and enthusiastically :)

I've been meaning to post their books for... um, a while. Here's one of Justin's books. He was responsible for picking/drawing all of the illustrations, narrating the text to me, and organizing and arranging the text and pictures. I typed in his work, pointed out some of his errors, and helped him with the layout. This is the closest approximation to how he arranged his book, though I can't quite get the HTML codes to do the proper aligning.

RELIGIONS
by Justin

  1. Judaism
  2. Buddhism
  3. Christianity
  4. Islam
  5. Muslim Empire
  6. Crusades
  7. Saladdin
  8. Problems
  9. The wonder that is religion

1. JUDAISM

Abraham taught Judaism around 2000 BCE. Here are is one of the traditions. Kosher Jews don't eat pork.

Jews believed in one God instead of a billion. They started in Israel. The Jews at one point were scattered around the world. They developed many different groups, because they were scattered. They developed different traditions. Some places were nice to them and some places were mean. They accepted the Jews, but often tried to kick them out. The Jews weren't allowed to worship in their own temples.

2. BUDDHISM

As its name suggests Buddha created it. But he wasn't always a Buddha. He was a prince but when he saw what the city life is like he created Buddhism. Buddha lived about 2,500 years ago in a castle shielded from the badness of the outside world.

Buddhism started in North India and spread to Korea, Japan and China. Hwen Yo brought Buddhism to Korea.

Many Buddhist people become monks for a few months when they are children but many men stay monks for life.

Buddha's teachings had no god and Buddhist people don't worship Buddha but they do follow his teachings. Buddhist people would meditate and it took many years of practice to learn how to perfectly meditate. At an offering place you can have some bowls of water, a picture or statue of Buddha, and some incense.

A Buddhist believes in Nirvana. In it you have many lives and each life is just a step closer to the true ending of your life. Every good deed you do, gives you good karma and every bad deed gives you bad karma. Depending on how much karma you have you will become something different in your next life.

3. CHRISTIANITY

Jesus

Jesus began Christianity but the Romans didn't trust him and for thirty silver pieces Judas told the Romans where Jesus was. So they crucified Jesus.

Jesus was a carpenter and a very good man, though he admitted that he sinned. He was in Israel. Christianity is a lot like Judaism just bended from Old Testament to New Testament. One of the changes is according to Christians, Jesus was the son of God, but according to Jews, he was just a prophet. He said you need to be kind, to go to church and admit all the sins you have done and correct them. He taught that God was nice.

Christianity split into many different kinds (just like Judaism). Some were Catholic, Orthodox.

Monks

The Pope

It started in catacombs where Christians went and started spreading and spreading until millions of people were Christian, into Rome, Byzantium, into Charlemagne's Empire, all over Europe and spread to the British Isles.

4. ISLAM

Islam started with Muhammad in a cave in 622CE. The Angel Gabriel showed Muhammad a scroll written in fire. Muhammad couldn't read but somehow he read the scrolls. He started out with followers. These followers were called Muslims. One day (after he had many followers) military people came to drive Muhammad out. of Mecca. Abu Bakr warned Muhammad, so they journeyed to Medina. Eventually he became the ruler of Medina. His people were starving so he raided the caravans. This made the people of Mecca start a war. Muhammad won and his troops poured in to Mecca. And he declared it the holy city of Islam.

5. MUSLIM EMPIRE

Started with Muhammad in a cave and an angel named Gabriel brought him a scroll which had words written in fire. Gabriel said "Read them" and even though Muhammad couldn't read, he read them. He learned the teachings of Allah. At first he had only 6 followers, his family. But he started to spread the word of Allah and more people listened. But the rich people didn't want to listen so they drove out Muhammad and so he took shelter in Medina in 622CE. He became the ruler of Medina. But his people at one point became hungry, so he told them to raid the caravans. This made Mecca angry, so they attacked Medina. The war lasted for 7 years. Eventually he conquered Mecca. The Muslim Empire became enormous.

6. CRUSADES

The Pope sent hundreds of knights to take Jerusalem from the Muslims in 1095. It took them 3 years to get there. But when they did they attacked Jerusalem... they were beaten. Eventually they basically raided a merchant ship for the wood to make a siege tower. They poured in and killed the people in Jerusalem. They ruled for 75 years. Then Saladdin took back Jerusalem. There were around seven Crusades.

In one of the Crusades Richard, King of England, earned his title as Richard the Lionheart. Richard was a great warrior and general. While he was away John ruled in his place. He was terrible.

7. SALADDIN

Saladdin was one of the greatest warriors for the Arabians because he re-took Jerusalem in 1187 CE and devoted his life to being a general.

Strategy on how to beat the Crusaders: he chose a valley full of trees and rocks to ambush the Crusaders who were foolish enough to go there.

Saladdin's Childhood: he spent years learning how to follow the Koran, and training himself to fight and he always wanted to retake Jerusalem.

He fought with his uncle and finally became vizier of all of Egypt.

He needed to gather a reputation so he went a little too far in being a good Muslim - he barely had a treasury, he gave so much to the poor!

8. PROBLEMS

Religion caused many wars one of these wars were the Crusades. It also makes people mean to each other. For example, the Jews who were scattered around the world. Religion can make civil wars.

9. THE WONDER THAT IS RELIGION

Often religion is an enemy but often is a friend. People would often die for their religion. It was what they believed in. Religion can bring peace and joy to many people. For the Jews one of their traditions is that they have Hannukah and they also have candelabra it has 8 or 9 candles. And Christians always wear their crosses.

Often people look towards their religion to save them. For example, when the Jews were scattered they still prayed.

Another tradition (not of the Jews) but of the Christians is to wear a cross around their neck. Another tradition is Communion.

A tradition of the Muslims is women wear hijabs. They are things to cover their heads.

OMG I KNOW!! And he was honestly doing his very best! My kids have a lot of strong points, but fine motor coordination is absolutely not one of them :D :D :D

What's even worse is that their musical talent makes their art look almost professional in comparison. It's quite breathtaking, tbh, and not in a good way ;)
