I feel seriously sick. You know Fox News North? This article is about how they're losing one of their anchors days before starting, which, you know, yay and all, but this quote just...

"Newspapers are losing circulation, in part because they fear controversy. The media won't tackle the Muslim issue realistically, won't analyse the black crime honestly, avoids anything that might upset the arrogance of some in the 'gay' community, avoids offending official language issues, is uneasy at analysing immigration problems, fears delving into the effects of multiculturalism."

God.

I thought it had been agreed that they couldn't even come into Canada because our broadcast laws don't permit news agencies to lie? Damn, you turn your back and look what happens.

Wouldn't anyone expressing any kind of sentiment disagreeing with the multiculti crew get prosecuted for hate speech in Canada? I seem to remember a couple of cases of opinions being treated as crimes. I would think basing a whole network on that sort of thing would require a new set of hate crime courtrooms with a revolving door and 24 hour service.

Actually, no. A lot of people disagree with multiculturalism - and gay rights, and a host of other left-type opinions. It becomes a hate crime when you step over the line from "I don't think we should be letting so many people into Canada and these statistics (link) show that they are disproportionately charged with crime and/or use up welfare dollars" to "so the only way to protect ourselves against them is to fight fire with fire." Or when you go from "The Bible says that homosexuality is wrong and gays should be put to death" to "so that's what we should do too."

Yes, there are fuzzy cases. Anne Coulter's landing in Canada and being unable to speak at Ottawa U was one of those times, IMHO, and although she makes me sick I think she should have been allowed to spout her bile. I'm pretty sure that, legally, she could have, though some of what she has said in the past pushed the limit. But overall when I've looked at the cases of "Canada penalizes people for stating simple opinions," it's not fuzzy at all. It's pretty freaking clear. "Let's kill gays/Jews/blacks/Muslims" is not an opinion. It is inciting hatred, and advocating crime. IMHO.

I fully admit my knowledge on the general topic is vague, since it's been a while since I was reading about it. I just remember it as seeming to take forever and a day for Mark Steyn and at least one other guy to defend themselves (and ultimately be exonerated, iirc) on hate crime charges for writing stuff with the basic theme of, "But, dude, really, Islamic fundamentalists have said repeatedly they want to kill us. Maybe they mean it and we should respond accordingly, yeah?"
