The crappy thing about living through interesting times is that you don't get to angst over your own boring existence as much as you'd like to. Here I am, with all sorts of Personal Issues going on, and then the most wanted man in the world is killed, and my country goes through its sixteenth federal election in six years, and then it's all about "is it moral to have any man killed instead of brought to justice, was it even possible to bring him to justice and what is justice anyway, will this make him a martyr, is it right to feel relief and to celebrate the death of a human being no matter how evil and insane, can anyone really blame America for breaking out into a huge street party over this, what would we think of the Arab world doing the same if Obama were assassinated, and will I have to spend the next four two years getting pamphlets adorned with John Baird's ferocious grin asking me if I agree that convicted pedophiles should be punished instead of given a hug and a balloon like the other parties believe and aren't the Conservatives great, and..." ::sigh:: dude, I just wanted to think about cleaning my basement this week, you know? And maybe working on Justin's French a little more.

I think the difference is a matter of scale. Obama, for all that I disagree so vehemently with pretty much everything he does, including letting his supporters call me a racist for that, still hasn't actually committed mass murder.

I think a lot of people would argue that Obama (and all of the West) have committed mass murder, in that our economic and foreign policy have resulted in the deaths of thousands of people in the Third World.

I can even see the merit in that point of view.

Right now, I don't care. My ethical every-life-is-sacred and thou-shalt-not-kill deeply held beliefs are no match for my visceral sense of satisfaction that the murdering son of a bitch is dead. Tomorrow, maybe I can remind myself what I think of "by any means necessary." Not today.

At some point, you'll have to take me through the mass murder by economic policy thing. I can get a bit of a glimmer around the edges because of the ethanol/corn thing, but I don't quite grasp the concept. It's always good to at least know what other people are thinking.

I'm kinda ambivalent about all the hoop-la surrounding bin Laden's demise. I'm glad he's gone but celebrating his assassination (which is kind of what it seems to be) also seems a little unseemly.

No offense intended, but considering that the man's followers came that close to murdering my near and dear one, I do believe I'm going to have a beer to commemorate his demise. :)

No offense taken. Like I said, I'm ambivalent. I kind of wish he'd been arrested and tried although I suppose that might have turned into an even bigger circus.
