Busy weekend.

Took Justin to his ballet class yesterday, and he was a very, very happy little person. At this age, there's really not much 'ballet' going on - it's mostly just running around in a leotard. But the teacher did have them using their bodies for all sorts of things. Eg, pretending to put only one toe in a pool with hungry crocodiles (aka toe-pointing). Or kneeling down to pick up seeds (aka pliƩs). Or pretending to be growing plants (port de bras). It was very cute. Justin absolutely loved it. He was just disappointed to learn that he will not be learning how to lift the female dancers until much, much later. He believes (and I agree) that he's perfectly strong enough to do it right now.

One thing that bothered him, though, was that he didn't have the right clothes. All the other kids (about 9 girls) were wearing leotards and most had ballet shoes, while he was in a t-shirt, sweat pants and bare feet. This didn't go over well. I had thought I'd only buy him the ballet clothes if he actually liked the class, but while I was sitting there watching them I thought, if he'd been a girl I wouldn't have thought to wait. I would've bought the little leotards and shoes, because that's what you wear to ballet class. It's just that with a boy, I can't quite believe he's really serious about doing ballet, or that he won't lose interest fairly quickly once he realizes there's no hitting or eating involved in this activity ;)

Anyway. My hang-up, not his. I promised we'd go buy the clothes together this week. So I'm going to take him to Malabar's, the same store where I bought all of my ballet and jazz and gymnastics uniforms and performance clothes for about 7 years. It always feels rather disconcerting when I find myself doing things with my kids that my mom did with me. Perhaps 'disconcerting' isn't the right word, because it's not a bad feeling. Just... odd.

After ballet class, I worked on my Corporations Suck paper for a little bit, then welcomed Todd and Susan and Turtle. They'd left Zane back in Kingston with Todd's mom - his first night away from Mama. Good visit, though the kids went to sleep insanely late.

One thing that was kind of cute was that at bedtime, the boys wanted Turtle to sleep in their room, but she said she wanted to sleep in her parents' room. They were very upset, and said she didn't love them and all sorts of child-drama. And Turtle apologized and said she did love them, and then repeated that she was going to sleep with her parents. Sorry!

Susan was a little apologetic about this rather hard-hearted attitude, but Chris and I were fairly amused. And at one point we told her, "No, come on, this is a good trait for her. Think about it - some day she'll be a teenager, her boyfriend's gonna whine that if she loved him she'd have sex with him... and if she doesn't want to, she'll just very firmly say Sorry! No dice!"

"But I'm huuurtin', baby!" he'll wail.

And she'll reply, "Yeah? Here's a magazine. Have fun." Or, "What, your hand's broken or something?"

More girls should be like Turtle, actually :)

OK, there was this meme that said you were supposed to get people to ask you three questions, and then answer them, and I thought it was being done just on comments but today I see people cut and pasted their questions onto a separate entry and oh my I'm so confused, I wish my brain woke up at the same time I did.

So, in case we're actually supposed to do it this way, here are

1. Generally speaking, are you a participant or an observer? Why?
Uh... my immediate reaction is to say 'observer, because I'm very shy'. But I've spent so much of my adult life combatting shyness that I think I've become a participant. Except when I'm really not that interested in whatever's going on, or when it's really a stage-fright-worthy situation (singing solo, running for office, etc).

2. What went through your mind the first time you saw your husband?
I think it was "I didn't know there would be somebody else here". I was finishing my volunteer training at a crisis center by doing an observational shift. I thought there would only be one volunteer on, Pete, whom I'd met. But Chris was there too, manning the phones.

He made very little impression on me, other than that he seemed fairly competent. In fact, for the longest time, I thought his name was Steve. And I made absolutely no impression on him. He has no memory whatsoever of our first meeting.

Rather ignominuous beginning ;)

3. What was the last lie you told?
Oooh, good one.

I honestly don't remember, and I've been racking my brain. Odds are, it was something to do with the kids - there's about a million things we fudge as part of daily life. 'Where's your really loud drum? I don't know.' 'After you go to sleep I do laundry.' 'No, I don't know what those two dogs are doing.'

Oh! I remember now!!

Marta called and asked if my mom would need her to go clean on Monday. I said I would talk to her and ask, but to assume yes. My mom called today and asked if I could call Marta and ask her to come on Monday. I said sure, I'll do that.

I have no idea why I didn't just say, "Oh, don't worry, I told her to assume she'd be needed on Monday." Possibly I thought my mother would resent me trying to control her life. Dunno. I have a mostly good, but sometimes dysfunctional, relationship with my mom.

Phew. Good questions :)

CJ - thanks so much for giving us this interview!

::chirping back:: It's good to be here, [livejournal.com profile] medee6040!

1) Your fans, indeed, the entire continent, wants to know - how on earth do you do it? You've got school, two small boys, a husband with a very demanding career, not to mention choir and writing - yet you always keep your sense of humor and you're there for your friends. How do you do it?
LOL!!!

Uh... by not doing all of that?
  • School is part time, and I goggle at parents who do it full time.
  • Two small boys are in school or day care too much of the time. I am eternally grateful that my summer lasts four months, and am looking to schedule things next year so I can be home two days of the week again, and spend them with the boys.
  • husband's demanding career is the bane of my existence and I deal with it by whining and weeping and gnashing my teeth
  • choir is a sanity saver
  • writing - uh... not doing that so much. Rather miffed at this. My muse buggered off on me. I've tacked posters on trees, 'Have You Seen This Muse', but so far, no calls.

So I guess I'd have to say I deal with it by doing everything sort of half-assed? And I long to someday be fully-assed.

2) What area of law do you intend to practice when you graduate, and why?
The legal kind :)

I really don't know. I'd like to say Family Law, but having heard from everybody who's ever done it that it's the most heartbreaking area of law, I think I'll stay away. Aboriginal title is very big. I think I'd like to do Legislation. Who knows.

My mother in law keeps suggesting I do Tax Law. It's Big Bucks. Which I would sorely need, to pay for intensive therapy if I were practicing Tax Law.

3) If you could run away for a no-tell weekend with one LO cast member *other* than Rey, who would it be?
::snicker::I wouldn't do the weekender thing with Rey, actually. Cute, but waaaay too... well, Reylike ;) for me.

Um... Dunno. Either Mike or Jack. They both seem to have a great deal of, uh, experience ;) Except I don't find Jack attractive, and am not sure Mike would be... how to put this... terribly focussed on someone other than himself?

Speaking for all of your fans, many thanks!

Well, you're not alone in your confusion because that's the way I did it too! But I enjoyed reading your answers again. :-) (Weren't [livejournal.com profile] medee6040's questions fun?)
