Whee. Just finished playing our third game (third adventure) of D&D with the boys. Justin likes it, but Daniel is absolutely enchanted. Chris thinks we should post a notice at our local comic book shop seeing if any other local kids are interested in joining us for D&D on weekends.

We're such geeks. And so very proud of it ;)

The geekdom continues, with... Drabble on request!

Leave a comment here with a drabble request, pairing or character-based. Give me one line of dialogue to be written in a drabble/ficlet (100-500 words). After you comment, put this meme in your own journal (if you want).

What I could do well:
Law & Order
The X-Files (sorry, only up to the Mulder years)
Queer As Folk (USA)
Homicide: Life on the Street

Anything else, I am not confident enough to try.

Spent some time with at Amit and Jeea's house yesterday. My god their little one is cute. She's all big dark eyes and curly black hair, and a high little voice.

Good visit, albeit kind of sad. Jeea lost her dad several years ago, Amit lost his two months ago and I lost my mother a week ago. So the conversation naturally drifted towards the rather morbid. But in a good way, not in a "buck up and be strong" kind of way. And I have to say, as tough as it is dealing with my mother's death... at least I was prepared. Both Amit and Jeea lost their dads from one day to the next. A hell of a lot harder to cope with, I'd say.

OK weekend, overall. I have a ton of e-mails, cards, letters, and phone calls to return, but I think I'll make myself a list and start going through them one by one rather than just stressing about an unknown number.

And it's been a good weekend, family-wise. Spent some good quality time together, walking in the woods, playing D&D, etc. Spent some good time with Chris' dad and his girlfriend, and Chris' brother and sister-in-law. Went with Guy to the Cancer ward, to drop off my mother's funeral bouquets. It felt like a very gentle coming-down kind of time.

Also getting ready to go to Spanish camp, which starts tomorrow. I sure hope the kids like it as much as Daniel liked it last year.

Here's the song that we played in the middle of my mom's funeral. It's one of the first songs I remember singing as a child.

Gracias a la Vida (Thank you to Life)
Violeta Parra

Spanish English
Gracias a la vida que me ha dado tanto Thank you to Life, who gave me so much
Me dio dos luceros que cuando los abro Gave me two stars (eyes), and when I open them
Perfecto distingo lo negro del blanco I distinguish perfectly between black and white
Y en el alto cielo su fondo estrellado And the starry background of the high sky
Y en las multitudes el hombre que yo amo And in the crowds, the one I love.
Gracias a la vida que me ha dado tanto Thank you to Life, who gave me so much
Me ha dado el oído que en todo su ancho Gave me my hearing, which within its reach
Graba noche y días, grillos y canarios Captures night and day, the cricket and the canary,
Martillos, turbinas, ladridos, chubascos Hammers, turbines, barks and squalls
Y la voz tan tierna de mi bienamado And the tender voice of my beloved.
Gracias a la vida que me ha dado tanto Thank you to Life, who gave me so much
Me ha dado el sonido y el abecedario Gave me the sounds and the alphabet,
Con él las palabras que pienso y declaro And with it, the words that I think and speak:
Madre, amigo, hermano, y luz alumbrando Mother, Friend, Brother and Light, illuminating
La ruta del alma del que estoy amando The path of the soul of the one I love.
Gracias a la vida que me ha dado tanto Thank you to Life, who gave me so much
Me ha dado la marcha de mis pies cansados Gave me the marching of my tired feet,
Con ellos anduve ciudades y charcos With them I walked past cities and ponds,
Playas y desiertos, montañas y llanos Beaches and deserts, mountains and plains,
Y la casa tuya, tu calle y tu patio And your house, your street and your backyard.
Gracias a la vida que me ha dado tanto Thank you to Life, who gave me so much
Me dió el corazon que agita su marco Gave me a heart that flutters in its cage
Cuando miro el fruto del cerebro humano When I see the fruits of the human brain,
Cuando miro el bueno tan lejos del malo When I see the good, so far from the bad,
Cuando miro el fondo de tus ojos claros When I see the depths of your bright eyes.
Gracias a la vida que me ha dado tanto Thank you to Life, who gave me so much
Me ha dado la risa y me ha dado el llanto Gave me laughter and gave me weeping,
Así yo distingo dicha de quebranto Thus I can distinguish between joy and sorrow,
Los dos materiales que forman mi canto The two materials of which my song is made,
Y el canto de ustedes que es el mismo canto And the song of yours which is the same,
Y el canto de todos que es mi propio canto And the song of all of us, which is my own song.

I'd like to see a scene between Anita Van Buren and Betty Abrahms circa 1996 during or just after the episode Corruption. According to scenes in Competence and Corruption both Anita and Betty started with the NYPD in 1982, meaning they should have been in the same Academy class together, and as women couldn't have been all that common in the Police Academy in those days, they probably knew each other. So here's the line.

Tell me, did you really find Lennie that irresistible or was he just convenient?
