The Games - no, not the Olympics

Just realized something: I have no plans to watch the Olympics this year, even though they're in Athens. What's happened to me? I'm a world-events addict, and always watched the Olympics before even though I don't normally watch sports. And I'm a history geek; games in the birthplace of the Olympics? That's major history points. And it's my brothers' hometown.

Hm. Must think on this. And possibly mend my ways.


However, I didn't mean for this to turn into an Olympic entry. I was just going to note that yesterday we played D&D with Karen, which thrilled Daniel to no end, because hey! New player! And hey!! It's Auntie KAREN!!

And then we had a little barbecue, with Karen & Scott and their friends Adam & Sharon, and then after the boys were in bed we played Carcasonne, Adam & Sharon's board game, which Chris and I had seen at Fandom but had not wanted to buy without testing it first.

Verdict on Carcasonne: Ooh! Shiny!

I'm not normally much into board games, but this has the potential to be quite addictive. It's quite absorbing, getting drawn into placing the little tiles and trying to amass points and trying to keep all the rules straight. And you can play with only two people, which is nice. I could see Chris really getting into it too. And there's no violence involved. It's way over Justin's head, but Daniel might be able to get into it. I could see this being a very, very good thing.



Hey. It's not nice to mock me just because I spent half an entry enthusing about a board game.

The only board game better than Carcasonne is Settlers of Catan, at least based on sales. I keep meaning to try them, but they don't stay on the shelf long enough.

I heard that Settlers is better, but not as conducive to being played by only two players. I was all enthused about buying it because we just got Kids of Catan and the kids love it, but we may have to wait to get Settlers for when the boys are a little older.

That keeps happening at Fandom too. They have an entire set of shelves dedicated to Carcasonne and all its expansions and variations, but good luck getting the one you want when you actually want it.

Hey, don't feel embarrassed about enthusing about Carcasonne. Scott & I just got back from Adam & Sharon's where we just played our first game of Carcasonne with the Builders & Traders expansion pack. :) :) We are enthused and mean to buy ourselves a set...and Adam & Sharon now want the Inns & Cathedrals expansion set. So, all and all, it's just a really nifty game. :)
