Canal fun

Went skating today. I wasn't too sure if we should go, because Justin was an unholy little terror last time and it ended up being a nightmare, and I don't want to be one of those parents who has a certain fantasy of what Good Family Time is supposed to be and inflicts that vision on the whole family whether they like it or not.

But. We decided to bring Justin's boots along in case he didn't want to skate, and bring the sled along, and have plenty of beavertails. And off we went.

And we were there for 1 1/2 hours of cold, tiring, uncomfortable fun ;) Daniel skated until he didn't want to skate any more. My legs and behind are crampy. My feet hurt. We spent $17.25 on beavertails. Justin hardly skated at all, but spent most of his time on the sled. I didn't realize it was Winterlude time, so we missed all sorts of activities - skating demonstrations, kite-flying, etc etc etc.

And yet it was exactly what I'd hoped we could do - have fun on the Canal as a family. The ice was beautiful, the sun was shining, almost all of Ottawa was out there... ::happy sigh::

Beavertails

I was asked what beavertails are and the best answer I could come up with was, "Canada's attempt to apologize for poutine". So I went and typed 'beavertails' on google, and came up with this website:

http://www.beavertailsinc.com/

The site was apparently written by someone who'd recently ingested some hash-beavertails, eg:

But BeaverTails® are more than a tasty, wholesome and unique snack ... they are an experience! Fun to walk around with ... fun to share with others ... fun to hold in your hands and eat! Just plain old fashioned FUN!

Uh... O... K...

What's So 'Dam' Special About BeaverTails®?

They are;
* unique ... wildly delicious ... nothing quite like them
* served warm, served fresh ... served fun !!!
* intriguing, animated preparation
* flexible ... all types of toppings
* what you eat when you are somewhere having fun ...

Uh, no. They're a flat pastry cooked in oil and then covered with any of a bunch of cool toppings. They're not ambrosia. They will not singlehandedly brighten your day and put a sparkle in your eyes and a bounce in your step. Especially since you generally eat them while wearing skates, so bouncing = bad idea. But they are pretty darn good.

Unfortunately, they don't make up for poutine. Nothing could, really.

I've wanted a copy of this article ever since I first read it, a couple of years ago:

Homefeeding Children: Threat or Menace? )

And this one... I just don't even know what to think about it.
