Surely there's an easier way to write this.

It makes sense to me, but at least I've heard of the case before. Without that background it would be much harder to interpret.

Case where a male student was not permitted to attend his prom with his boyfriend and sued the school board. MacKinnon granted the injunction preventing the defendants from blocking his attendance.
