When I was a kid, I used to have recurring dreams where I would discover a hidden room wherever I was living. Sometimes it would be a large suite of rooms. I'd notice a door I'd never seen before, open it up, and gape at the empty space before my eyes. They were such neat dreams, and I'd always feel so disappointed when I woke up and was still in the same place, but feeling like it was smaller somehow, after the heady joy of thinking I had so much more space available for me to expand into.

I haven't had one of those dreams in a long, long time. Definitely not since the kids, anyway. But I don't much mind.

I just made my study about three times bigger. By spending about 20 minutes clearing garbage out and putting things back where they belong and putting the kids' toys in a little pile for them to take back to their room. All of a sudden I have desk space, I can reach my keyboard without pushing dozens of things out of the way, and have re-discovered my scanner. And my eyes can track smoothly across large clear places, instead of skittering about fixing on bits and pieces of crap and stuff and junk. And the nice thing about this expansion is, it will remain until we clutter up again.

Sometimes it's nice, being a grown-up :)

I've had that dream, or one very like it, several times. The rooms are usually fitted out with antique furniture that I've never seen before, and like very much. I'm always *really* pleased to find the other rooms (which can vary from a single room or a whole house-worth). Like you, I'm disappointed to wake up and find that I've still got the same 10 rooms I had when I went to sleep... Interesting though, isn't it?

My own extrapolation on it is that it means I'm finding or opening up other parts of myself. Nice discovery, eh?

I haven't been able to decide whether I envy you or not for that part of your recurring dream. My extra rooms are almost always completely bare or have abandoned, dusty crap in them. It's exciting to think of filling them with my stuff, or even clearing out the dusty crap, but now I'm wondering if the beautifully furnished thing wouldn't be better.

Oh, I know, it's like mega-Christmas come early!!

Oooh... very nice!

... except now I'm wondering what does it mean that I no longer have this recurring dream. Is there nothing left for me to discover? And how crummy is that, at age 35? Or, more accurately, age 26, because I stopped having those dreams around the time I had Daniel.

Hm. Much thinking ahead for me.
